Dumb thing!

My 15 hp merc. was not 'pissing', so I erroneously forced water from a garden hose into the exhaust port (not the **** port). I eventually got the boat 'pissing', so that is no longer the problem. It starts and idles fine, but I have no power when underway. I removed spark plugs and tipped motor around with the intent of dumping any water that may have gotten into the cylinders. Any ideas?

First welcome to iboats.

Before you do any damage to the motor I would strongly suggest that you purchase a service manual.

I have no idea where you got that idea for a "fix" but it is not in any manual I have seen.

In the meantime i would take out the plugs and spray some oil in pronto whilst you are waiting for a manual! I wouldn't try running or even turning the engine over either! Basically it sounds like you may have to strip the engine down altogether but that's only my initial opinion, someone on here with more experience will probably give you some better advice on what to do next.

At least you got one thing right though.....the title of your thread!

Re: Dumb thing!

the whole time you were trying to get it to "****" you were over heating the motor!! sounds like mattman is right if you over heated that motor then god knows what the end result is. open it up!! and keep being honest....TOOCAN

Re: Dumb thing!

Thanks for the fast replies....even on Thanksgiving!!

It was running yesterday on the water (after I flushed the exhaust port with fresh water).....pissing was working all the time. It just wouldn't run fast; so I don't think it is an overheating issue. I probably ran it for 45 minutes at slow speed while I placed decoys for opening duck season.

I would think that any moisture that may have gotten into the cylinder(s) by injecting water into the exhaust port would have burned-off after 45 minutes of running. Any other thoughts/suggestions?

Is anyone SURE that injecting water into the exhaust port will prove harmful?

Thanks........

A relatively small amount injected into a cylinder through the exhaust port could increase compression, or even totally fill the compressed combustion chamber, causing pressures that get to obscene, and can do all kinds of damage, including broken pistons, rings, etc.

hope it helps

I imagine that when you break the engine apart it'll look a bit like a Cafe Latte if you ran it for 45 mins. Sorry mate, really sounds as if you need to get that manual and start with the tool kit.
