Hello, everyone

I have 1964 28 hp 2 cyl, model#28402m. I replaced fuel pump, now the engine keeps on running, except it coughs once in a while.

what would be a cause? any hints, info will appreciated.

ps, coughs at idling only. Thank you.

Sounds like you need to richen the low speed mixture. Adjust knob 1/4 turn counter-clockwise and it should stop coughing. Fine tune from there. You may have to disconnect the control rod-thingy from the needle itself to get it to turn far enough.. Just re-connect when adjusted properly.

Updates, thank you all for help.

Today, I did carb adjustment, it has no effacts on coghing, but tighten packing nut seems to help, but not 100% yet, maybe I need to keep the engine running a bit longer. It was rainig here today.

what would be my problem if the packing nut helps the problem?

Might try a link n sync as well, timing off can cause a lean sneeze.

toss a tru-value o-ring, #47, behind the packing nut and it'll be surely sealed. Maybe you're pulling some air through there, thus leaning it out.

Re: engine coughs after replaced fuel pump.

updates,

Today, I did try to tighten a packing nut on S/S needle valve. It does help.

when I first start the motor, it ran fine for first 1 to 2 minutes. Seems like when the motor warms up or get up to temperture, it starts doing put put sounds like. sounds like it is going to die.

Is that something fuel or electrical ? carb adjustment has no effecton it.

my service manual does not number #47 o-ring, please send me attachment.
Thank you.

Maybe give the carb's a rebuild. May have dragged some nasty stuff in there when the previous pump was failing.

No. 47 is True Value's number for the o ring, not a part in the parts catalog. If it's leaking at the packing, the motor will run lean (more air than needed). As above, if some crud got let loose when the fuel pump was taken down, it could have worked it's way into the carb, not getting enough gas, and making it run lean.

Good rule of thumb is when any fuel system work needs to be done, go thru the whole system (fuel pump, hoses, carb rebuild.)
