Re: 78' 35HP Johnson Starting/Running Saga

Everything sounds good mate, your compression readings are starting to sound more like it,just to mention you might want to start using synthetic two stroke oil, the extra protection it gives your motor is totally worth it.Also after your first run out make sure you re-torque the head bolts.......CHEERS:D

Thanks, I will be re-torquing the bolts after my trial run tomorrow or monday. It starts and runs WOT great, sounds better than it ever did!

Cooling system is working great I can tell when the T-stat opens because pee-hole water cools right down, head temps are as follows...

Idle...112-123
WOT...98-105

I took the temps on the head reading the top to bottom with a laser temp probe. Note this is external surface temp, since I have no way of getting readings anywhere else.

Can I add an external temp gauge or alarm?

One more side note, at idle the engine runs good then coughs a few times and dies every once in a while, always starts right back up if I bump the throttle control up very slightly it runs indefinantly.

BK
there is a tech bulliten by OMC on why they quit the 100 to 1 mix on 35hp and smaller motors.
} wasnt due to any running issues.
yamaha still uses it on 30hp and smaller.
I dont reccomend it for reasons posted.

on the cough, your fuel mix is to lean at low speeds.
open up the idle mixture screw a bit until it quits.

From the god of all 9.9 site, Technical Bulletin #2162

The bulletin read: If ran at a high RPM or under a load for extended periods of time, may seize due to lack of adequate internal lubrication.

I'd say this was a running issue, why run the risk, it's only adding more oil. If someone could actually post the bulletin I'd love to read it.

Thanks Ezeke, so if you run your motor a lot use 50:1, run 100:1 if you want to wear it out quicker.

Right, plus it changes the gasoline/air ratio.

SB 2211 is more related to the thread except that TC-W3 oil is current.
