Which way do I set the vanes for the proper direction of rotation. Looking down in the pump housing do the vanes curve to the left or the right?
Thanks alot for any info

The shaft should rotate clockwise as you look down at the water pump!

Re: 4.0hp water pump impeller replacement

Even if you were to install the new impeller with the vanes pointing in the opposite direction, they will right themselves to the correct orientation once the motor starts.

That being said, good shop practice dictates that you may as well have them pointing the right way in the first place. All modern outboards (with likely the rare exception but none I know of) rotate clockwise as viewed from the flywheel end.

So, you'll want to rotate the driveshaft CW as you're looking down as the lower unit. Note to be sure and rotate the impeller and driveshaft together, with the slot in the impeller aligned with the impeller drive key. As you turn the impeller, force it into the pump housing until it engages the key.

A dab of grease on the flat of the driveshaft will help hold the key in place until the impeller is fully seated. Making a mark on the driveshaft, up-side of the pump, indicating where the key is, will help you align things properly. It's hard to see where that key is once the impeller starts going into the pump.

One word of caution, it's real easy for the key to slide away as you're installing the impeller.

After you have the impeller fully seated, gently hold onto it and move the driveshaft to and fro. You'll know right away if the key engaged the impeller, as you'll feel a slight amount of free play before the impeller starts moving with the driveshaft.

If the key didn't engage, pull the impeller out, reposition the key, and give it another shot. Repeat until Victory! You'll find that with practice you'll get pretty good at this but it's a bit tricky the first few times.

Re: 4.0hp water pump impeller replacement

I am not an outboard mechanic so you dont have to take what I say to heart, but when I replace my impeller i put a small amount of motor oil on the tips of the veins to help it slip into the housing. New impellers are stiff. I like the idea of putting a small amount of grease on the key to hold it in place. I never thought of that. I bet I spent an hour trying to time it so I could rotate the impeller into place while I had the lower unit on its side with the key facing up and just as it was about it engage the key and keyway would line up. I just kept thinking that had to be the worst design of a maintainace part since the ridiculous way Toyota put their oil filters on their early '90s 4 runners. Anyway, good advice from emckelvy. Good luck to ya.

Motor oil probably won't hurt the rubber, but what I usually use is a dab of marine-grade grease. Vaseline will work as well, some folks even use a bit of liquid dish soap.

Re: 4.0hp water pump impeller replacement

Thanks to everyone for the info. I got the impeller in and the LU reinstalled. I always use a dab of grease to hold things like the keyway in place. Checked the prop rotation in F N R pre the book and all looks good. Tomorrow I'll get the ice (17 degrees here ) out of my water drum and fire up the motor to check the water flow. Once again a big thanks to everyone and this forum for allowing me and others to pick your brains.

Re: 4.0hp water pump impeller replacement

Here's the update. Started up the motor and after about 15sec. started to get alittle water spraying from the weephole. I was happy for about 30sec. and the water stopped coming out. I shut her down and removed the LU again just to make sure everything was in it's proper location. All was good with no clogged water tubes or passages. My question now is should there be some kind of seal where the plastic tube from the waterpump slides up over the copper water tube in the leg ? All the diagrams I have seen do not so a seal between the two tubes. Even the Seloc manual doesn't show one.
Thanks again.

Re: 4.0hp water pump impeller replacement

I had this same problem with my 9.8. If they are the same style then the pipe in the leg actually seals into the top of the water pump. The plastic larger pipe on top of the water pump housing is just a guide. I ended up having to replace the whole water pump housing as it had gotten hot and melted just a little, which made it not pump water. It was $60 from my Merc dealer. If your housing even looks like it might be out of shape it probably needs replaced. Good luck.
