Okay so I have twin 1996 Saltwater series II 225 Yamahas on a 26 mako. The starboard motor starts and turns off like it should. But the port motor starts and shuts the fuel pump off but the motor keeps going and going until I disconnect a fuel line and that takes a good 5 minutes for it to finally cut out at idle.. as for the saftey kill switch on the ignition itself.. it does absolutely nothing.

Now ive done my homework and I know its the actual key unit itself that grounds out the system when you turn it to off and that is what shuts down the motor but Id really rather not spend the 400$ on a replacement unit.

I figured the best way to do it is install two fancy switches for a whopping 20-30$ worth of stuff. Plus I would really enjoy the peice of my mind incase a motor runs away on me and i cannot stop it as I learned last time i was on the water.

Does anyone have any idea what wires I would be tackling to make this happen and which one I would be splicing into.

Thanks everyone for your time.

L225TXRS
left hand turn lower,
225 HP
Trim and tilt
X= 25" shaft and S indicates 1994 production run.
means its a 2.6L 225.
kinda a dumb motor.
check the black wire at the key switch for continuity to the engine block.
you will need a long jumper and a multi-meter.
then thest the key switch black to white with the key off, should show about 0 ohms.
then test white at the key switch to white on the ECU connector.
should have about 0 ohms.
what kind of pumps are running?
that engine had no electric pumps when it left the factory.

I dont know if it is a mut motor or w.e maybe it is a dumb one
it is a 3.1L v6 76 degree engine not a 2.6
it is a fuel pump i would imagine its right under the bottom two carbs.

Now that i have somewhere to work with the kill switches ill go from there thanks.

But hmm so it seems to be that my engines arent normal then? that code is a 1994 2.6 225
but i have a 3.1 225?!?! it is electronic ignition also

I just got the boat like 2 weeks ago and ive been going through the whole thing left and right

Re: 1996 Yamaha 225 Kill Switches

if you have 6 individual carbs with a fuel pump mounted at the lower cowl and a two piece air box,one for each bank you definatly have a 3.1L.
the 0lder manual I looked at lists the X,25 inch as a 3.1.
but the checking procedures are the same.
for some reason the ECU is not seeing a shut down signal so its keeping the main relay energized.
anytime the key is on,or the ECU sees it as on,it latches the relay and powers up the ECU and enrichment pump.
all that pump does is control fuel enrichment for cold start, rapid accel, knock detect and rapid decelleration.
the 3 lift pumps actually supply the carbs.
make sure the T stats are working as a bad one can cause a lean condition in the #6 fuel bowl.

Yea when I Turn the key off all the buzzing from the pump stops etc, but the ECU is left on.

So doing so I can create an auxiliary kill by tapping into the wire that you mentioned by simply grounding it out with a three way switch?
