I have a 1982 15 1/2 Bomber Bassmaster with a 1977 Johnson 70 & am going to be doing some work on it this winter & one of the things I want to do is replace the steering system. What type of system would be an easy replacement on my boat?

Re: Replacing Boat Steering

Most of the cable systems I have seen are made by Teleflex. It is likely yours is a standard Teleflex Safe-T QC helm, they are readily available. If you get allot of torque feed back from your engine you may want to consider a Teleflex NFB (No feedback) helm. I am going with one of those on my little tri-hull.

The QC helm has a quick connect at the helm end of the steering cable. The standard, older model helms have a threaded collar at the helm end that screws to the helm. Both are common.
While you are at it inspect your cable. If it does not slide freely inside of its sleeve, replace it.
