I moved a dock last summer with my boat. It took about 6 hours. the last 30 min I had problems with the engine. it idled poorly and now it is hard to start. It also has the sneeze at idle.

it is a 225 johnson. i am not sure how many hours. I have owned it for about 3 years and it has run and started flawlessly just barly turn the key. I changed the plugs and cleaned the carbs and this seemed to help. i have not done a compression check but I am pulling the boat this week end and will chk compression and spark.

You need to give it the basic health check to begin with.
Compression
Spark
Fuel delivery
Spark plug condition (all of them to compare)

When you cleaned the carb's did you put new kits in them ???

Re: 1989 hard to start

The lean sneeze can be due to a restriction in the idle circuits (passages) in the carb bodies. Could be some debris, dirt or even dried fuel. If this is the problem, a complete teardown and overhaul should correct the situation. Be sure you pull all the jets out and visually inspect them, then blow all the passages out with an aerosol carb cleaner-checking for uniform spray through the passages from one body to the other.
