I was just watching Holmes on homes in New Orleans, and they were rebuilding this ladys home that was wiped out when Katrina hit. One of the things that was brought to light was the exorbitant power bills she was paying in her old home per month $750-$1000.
At this time we are paying 5.91 cents for the first 1332 KWH and 8.27 cents for all KWH over 1332 KWH. (killo watt hour)
What are you paying?

Re: power costs

I live just outside of New Orleans and on my last bill, the per kWh charge was about 5 cents. That isn't bad, but we have lots of add-ons, starting with a 3 cent per kWh "fuel adjustment," which goes up as the cost of fuel goes up. We also have a small environmental charge and what is referred to as a "LURC Hurricane Charge," which 10.2 percent of all the other charges.

Even now, my bill ends up being about twice what the actual kWh charges are, when all of the "junk" is added on. Last summer, when fuel costs went ballistic, it was much higher. What makes this all extremely annoying, is that we have a nuclear power plant less than 50 miles away. Maybe its me, but I kinda think that nuclear powerplants don't use much fossil fuel!!!!!

Isn't it nice to know that my local utility seems to be selling of all that "nuc juice" to other utility companies, instead of using it to power my house? GRRRRRRRRRR!

I pay exactly what you do as I'm only a hundred miles or so away. But we also have the same deal down here in vancouver. We pay a surchage for environmental fees, public transit and others. Still a good deal compared to most of the world.

For JAYMERRIL, that nuke plant probably only produces the baseline power needs and the rest is coal or natural gas fired. Here 90% is hydro electric and the remainder is picked up by natural gas turbines and purchases off the open market.

Re: power costs

Here up North I pay my electric power bill based on my annual average..... which is $145/month which is for less that 600 kwh per month.

That is for my 3/4 hp well pump, lights, oil burner fan, lights, and appliances (electric stove/over, W/D, fridge and freezer). I have to admit that getting a HE front Loader washer did cut back my bill since it uses less water and does not leave clothes as wet so they are easier to dry off too.

For the lake house I pay about 7.8 cents per Kw but since it is a co-op, we get about 2 months of "free" usage when the capital credits are applied each year.

The city house is a flat $96 per month on a level payment plan.

There is a "dyno fuel" fired plant a couple of miles away from me. It has a very large tank farm, so it probably runs off of some sort of fuel oil.

Re: power costs

We pay .12, November's bill was $65. December should be higher because of the shorter daylight hours. One thing that helps us is, we have a gas(propane) hotwater heater, cooking stove and boiler........ But, then our annual gas bill isn't exactly cheap.

I pay 10.5 cents a kw. Last month I used 2087 kwh. It's a bit high over last year but they estimated it as well. Not sure why they would. Our highest month is usually February. We average around 300 dollars for that month. But thats heat, lights, hot water, and in the coldest months.

Lights, hot water, stove, tv, water pump ETC, I refuse to heat with baseboards unless absolutely neccessary, those things will break you fast.

Re: power costs

We pay $.117XXXX per kWh. , Then get a nuke credit, then pay for energy assistance fee, then a fuel cost adjustment fee, plus a $.25 / day for the meter.

So that along with sales tax adds about $.04 to the cost, making it around $.15 kWh.

Re: power costs

You post made me do some thinking and some research rbh.

I also live in British Columbia and like you, BC Hydro is our utility provider, but we live on Haida Gwaii, a group of islands off the coast, so we're not hooked up to the grid, so to speak. Our electricity comes from two sources; first is EPCOR Utiliies Inc.'s small hydroelectric plant which is contracted to BC Hydro, second is back-up power generated at BC Hydro's diesel generation station in Sandspit. I don't know what the ratio is of hydro versus generator but I do know that we use the generators alot more in the summer time due to obvious reasons.

As residential users our power costs us 6.84 cents a kwh plus a daily basic fee of 13.49 cents, a rate riderof 1%, a clean fund levy of 0.4% and sales tax. According to a local newsletter, "Haida Lass"; "This power is costing BC Hydro six times more than we are paying..." If this is accurate it is frightening to me. I'm going to look into alternative sources of power. Currently we average between 40 and 45 kwh usage per day and I would like to bring this average down considerably.

There is a large wind farm being proposed in Hecate Strait, between Haida Gwaii and the mainland called the "NaiKun wind project". It will be interesting to see what happens there.

Re: power costs

They say 8.73 cents per KWH but by the time all is said and done it comes out to 10.1 cents per KWH.

All electric house. Heat pump for heat and AC. Last 12 months, high $336, low $63,
