Need help picking a new carb!!

I have a 97 Larson Hampton with a 5.7 Volvo (Chevy) motor.
I've been through a couple of used/rebuilt carbs the last 2 seasons, each one had it's good points and bad. So...this year I've decided that I'm buying a new carb with the features that I want and not one that I got a good deal on.

I'm looking at the Holley: Model 4175 (PART #: 0-80552) 650CFM, electric choke etc, etc.

I am just looking for some input on what other people think about this carb on this motor?

Thanks

I'm not a big fan of Holleys do to the power valves popping if you have a misfire and it backfires through the carb. I like Edelbrock myself. Put it on, set the idle and forget it...

I would second (or third ;) ) the Edelbrock suggestion. I realize the Holly / Edelbrock discussion is similar to people saying they like Ford or Chevy - a lot of emotion gets involved... but in my experience, the Edelbrock is much "easier" and less prone to needing continual adjustments. (Maybe that's because most of the "Holly" guys I know simply like fiddling with the carb adjustments, etc).

Anyway - the Holly model you note is a spreadbore type, and the Edelbrock 1409 is a squarebore. If your manifold is a spreadbore you may need an adapter plate in order to use the Edelbrock. (Not a big deal, just something to be aware of).

At Summitracing the Holly Marine 4175 lists for $410, while the Edelbrock Marine 1409 lists for $335.

Holley fixed that problem in 1992 and sells an easy retrofit kit to add the check valve to older models if you so desire.

I like the edelbrock 600 and if going with a 750 or above, the holley. The idle circuit in the edelbrock 750 is really small and it can be a major pita to tune.

finally, on the edelbrocks, be mindful that your fuel pressure is in the specified range. If it's too high (even a little bit, sometimes even if it's at the upper end of the recommended range), it'll push gas by the needles and wreak havoc.

otherwise the edelbrock 600 is a drop on and go in the majority of situations with the calibration right on the money for most stock or near stock 350s...

Good luck with it either way you go.

Cheers

Re: Need help picking a new carb!!

Thanks for the help!

Looks like Edelbrock wins out. The last thing I want to be doing is tinkering with my carb all year. I had to do that all last season with the Rochester that I currently have on it.

Anything else anyone can think of that I may need to change for the Edelbrock setup?

You just need an adapter plate to fit the Edelbrock carb to your stock GM intake. Your fuel line will need to be moved a little. There will be a little tinkering and adjustments here and there to install the new carb, but you would have to do this if you went with either one. I have been using Edelbrock carbs for years on cars with excellent results and have heard nothing but good things with their marine applications...

The Edelbrock marine carbs are exellent carbs, The Holley marine is a great carb also, and it bolts on in place of the Q-Jet. So while the Edelbrock is less money, by the time you factor in the price of an adapter, buying or having a PROPER fuel line made up, (no Shucks automotive fuel line) and linkage mods, The Holley comes out cheaper. I have installed plenty of both; no real complaints about either. 'nutcase

The big ticket to the power valve on the Hollys is to use a high altitude or one of the shielded power valves. Don't jack the timing to high and you won't have backfire issues.

Holley's are a little misunderstood. They are made for quick/track tuning, hence you can disassemble them almost all the way on the manifold.

Edlebrocks are good and basically a redo of the old Carter AFB carbs.

Just make sure it is a MARINE CARB. or you will never get it to run right.

And If You Have A Sticky Float Issue With A Marine Carb, It Dumps Excess Fuel Into Engine Beneath Flame Arrestor And Not Onto Top Of Motor Where It Could Run Into Bilge And Or Ignite!!!!

I would also recommend the 1409.

I took it out of the box, installed it, adjusted the idle/mixture and was good to go!
