Hello everyone, I am new to the forum, well long time reader, first time poster.

Anyway, So i bought my first boat, 1988 blue-water open-bow 19ft, inboard 350 rebuilt with 50hrs on it, brand new mercrusier outdrive, on a bunk trailer, runs good, new floor in it, all new interior, paid $500 for the whole thing.

Here is the thing, there is a hole in the transom (the one below the hole for the outdrive), the rest of the transom is not rotted out at all, and is very solid. But there is this hole in it. My question: Is there a way to just fiberglass over the hole? or does the whole transom need to be replaced?

I am not afraid of the work, I am just new to the boating world.

pics are below.

You can patch that with fiberglass, but the transom does look pretty rotted

Looks like a good boat....transom will need some attention though.

what you should do and what you can probably get away with are two different things..... I would say the first step is to remove all that bondo and probe for any rot..... If it truly is just there then the area could be filled with a thick mixture of sawdust and epoxy resin and then glassed over..... you would need to grind the surrounding glass back at an angle and glass over with progressively bigger peices of cloth untill you have reached the outer limits of your grinding and matched the thickness of the hull

The area outlined in red are where you will need to taper back and the purple will be removed down to the wood

Do you know if the floor was properly replaced or just scabbed on top of a giant pile of rot. If the floor is solid and good and the stringers check out then I would fix the transom the right way if you are going to hang a brand new drive on the back.
