Re: bung/plug left out

Hi guys
Thanks for the positive feedback, but yes leaving the plug out is considered an accident here in Australia, it wasn't done on purpose and is covered by insurance.
If the boat is running rough because of plug being left out,it will be covered, just like driving your car into another car, your covered under insurance because its an accident.
Servicing and winterizing your boat (which we dont have to do here, winterizing that is) is a requirement and is not covered by insurance. If you fail to winterize your boat or you fail to change your impellor etc or you dont do regular services on your engine and it breaks down, then that is not covered by insurance.

But being in a rush and accidenlty leaving the plug out and submerging your boat, comes under insurance, like leaving the heater on in your house and it catches fire, and burns your house down, your silly fault BUT! its comes under insurance, WHY??? because it was an accident.:)

This is from my insurance company website

Will I be covered if my motor breaks down?

We do not cover any mechanical, electrical or electronic failure of a motor, including seizing or overheating in the event of wear and tear. We do provide cover however, if your motor is damaged as a result of an insured event or when your boat is run aground, sunk or burnt and your claim otherwise falls within the terms of the policy. Lack of maintenance is not covered, as this is considered to be maintenance issues.

Ummmmmmmmm..........

I hate to spoil your day, but.........

A bilge plug IS regular maintenance. (All over the world).

If your Insurance Co is covering this, then Thank your lucky stars.

No Charlie, not spoiling my day mate, but there has to be a line drawn somewhere, what is accidental and what is maintenance.

It's clearly not all over the world that the plug/bung is under the heading "Regular maintenance" but a "requirement" for your boat to stay afloat.
Anyway the insurance company has already said to me personally that if the the problem is caused by the plug/bung being left out,(and I agree it was my stupid fault) it will be covered by insurance, because under their policy (and all insurance policies in AUSTRALIA) it is covered so this really isnt my issue,

My problem is, and the dispute is, if the water didnt come from leaving the bung out, how did it get in? we know the head is not cracked and it all happened after the bung was left out, anyway come Tuesday hopefully I will find out more.

I will keep you guys posted

:)

I don't even understand why all the debate/speculation here. Know one here knows what his policy says, or anything else about his insurance.
My suggestion would be to "Wait and see" what his Insurance company says. Then you will know.

Let us know the outcome Mark.

Re: bung/plug left out

Hi Guys
Well I met upwith both the mechanic and Insurance assessor today, We looked at the motor and the only thing that we found out was, yes there was water in the engine. The mechanic has taken off the intake manifold to show there was water in the motor. We already knew this. The question is how did the water get into the engine. The assessor is not convinced it came in through the dipstick, and cant workout, if the water got into the engine because the bung was left off, how did it get in?

He said maybe its a cracked head or head gasket, but the mechanic quickly spoke up and said he doubts that very much, as the motor is running well, not missing etc and I confirmed that. The assessor still said that we still dont know what is wrong with it, the HEADS NEED TO COME OFF, which I agreed.

Hard to work out what happened to the motor if we cant see inside. Anyway it seemed a waste of time for both the assessor and myself, as the heads should have been off so we could work out what was wrong.

Anyway the mechanic has to take the heads off, which he said he will do within the next couple of days.

What I cant understand, why wouldnt the mechanic pull the heads? He has to do it anyway to find out what the knock is.
