Re: Flywheel Nut Came Loose 1977,200hp Evenrude
The flywheel nut came loose because the nut was not torqued properly. This resulted in having the flywheel key shear, allowing the flywheel turn somewhat on the crankshaft which throws the engine out of time.
Remove the flywheel and the timer base. Clean up the tapers on the flywheel and the crankshaft. Install a new flywheel key so that the outer straight edge aligns straight up and down with the engine, NOT with the flywheel taper.
Install the timer base, then the flywheel so that it aligns properly with the key, then torque the nut to 145 foot pounds.
