Re: weird post

the craigslist list motor is not worth any where near $1,000. being a dock buster, makes it less desirable. yes, i have seen motors that have sat, start 1st or 2nd try. they were put up correctly, and then prepped before starting.

Here is a vid of mine taken a couple of years ago.The last time it ran was '91 as near as I can remember,it could have been before that even.I had started it just before I ran to get the camera with no issues at all,it started just like you see it start in the video. For whatever reason the stater solenoid would click but would not turn the motor over so I had to jump the starter but aside from that it was just like it ran yesterday. The boat is a mess and I regret not cleaning it up beforehand but it is what it is.It looks good now.It needs a transom which I will get to when I can.Ron G

Re: weird post

Rare but it does happen. I bought a engine that sat in a barn for 10+ years. The owner said it was there when they bought the property, knew nothing about it, just wanted it out of the way. I bought it for next to nothing as a parts motor assuming it was blown or locked up at the very least.

Got it home and it was at least 3-4 months later before I even put it on a stand.... turned it over with a wrench after soaking the cylinders for a few days (never even attempted to turn it before hand...) hooked a battery up and spun it a few times to blow the oil out, put the plugs back in it, squirted some gas in the carb throats and spun it again. It fired within 2-3 seconds...

Pulled one of the float bowls off...clean as a whistle.... hooked a gas can up to it, put the muffs on and ran it for a few seconds.... impeller was in a dozen pieces or so... changed that and the engine ran good but had low compression... stuck it on one of my son's engineless boats and he ran it for a few hours with a heavy dose of seafoam in the gas... compression came up and he's still running that engine today. That was 4 or maybe 5yrs ago.

I've bought many used "sat up" engines and this was the only one that I had such luck with. Most ended up being parted out, one ran after rebuilding the carbs and another pretty much needed the entire ignition system replaced along with a carb rebuild.

Vast majority of the time there's good reason a engine has been left to sit....

And one of the saddest, but very common things you see with "barn" motors is someone took the plugs out and other pieces off then just walked away. Leaving the plugs out is an open invitation to seizing the cylinders...moisture gets in, rust forms and it's stuck. I traded work/rebuilds on two E-rude Fastwins early in 09 for a Johnson 35 hp...got the Johnson and looked at the Fastwins...they were absolute junk, missing parts, no plugs and both were stuck tight...what a shame.

Obviously you can't tell the actual condition but it does appear to be comeplete
didn't notice if it included a original tank. Not worth much as a everyday motor but
a collector of Merc freak models might find it tempting.I would think Dock buster controls alone might be a premium. My aftermarket ser. manual seems to indicates
Mark78A (59) Merc 600,700 (60,61) and 800 (60,61) could be direct reverse and were available with counter rotation.I noticed that the "Quicksilver" gearcase has the pump on the prop shaft I guess that gets it as low as possible because they run them so shallow.Probably helps keep the leg slim as well.

I pulled it off of the Glastron that you saw it on until I can get the transom repaired. It is on a stand beside another identical engine that I bought for the power trim.Actually the other engine is a '70 model year, one year newer than the one that goes on the boat.
I would love to get that back in the water but things keep getting in the way.LOL.I have a 7 year old grandson that needs to feel that deep V in rough water:))Ron G
