Loud tapping noise

I have a mid 80's 2-stroke 25hp evinrude outboard. It runs fine, has good compression and has no issues except 2 things.

Problem #1: It is a pull start motor, so when trying to start, it pulls harder than I think it should.
Problem #2: When running it has a tapping noise very similar to a valve tap you would here on a car engine that has noisy valves.

Does anyone have any idea what my problems might be.

Thanks,
iicharlie

Re: Loud tapping noise

Maybe a recoil issue. Pull off the recoil, and rope start on the flywheel notch. Hopefully, the noise is gone, and it is indeed a recoil issue.

Re: Loud tapping noise

could be as simple as the starter pawl, not releasing all the way.

Re: Loud tapping noise

agree with the recoil being noise, also,if your cord has been cut shorter,it will take more pull to get to crank, simple gearing

Similar to my sound.

...but that is from a broken bolt on the hood pan.
