HEre's the scoop on these two motors:
I placed an want ad a couple of years ago on aomci.org's site for a johnson 25horsepower (early 50's). I had a fellow from Wisconsin respond that he had one in pretty good condition and that he would be willing to ship it to me--if I recall shipping and all was about $300. I bought it from him and really liked it, although the compression was borderline. Another member of aomci shipped me a powerhead with better compression, carb, and electric start and choke for a ridiculously low price for that motor.
ANyway, I rebuilt it all and sent him a link to the video of it running and we talked a couple of times on the phone----he's interesting to talk with. I told him if he ever came across any really nice 50's motors with high compression I would like to have a shot at them.
About a year ago, he emailed me that he had a '57 18 with 120psi on each cylinder (tested dry) and a '56 30hp with estart and echoke that had really good compression, too, and that were in decent cosmetic condition.
It wasn't until recently that he had enough slow time (he and his brother own a boat business) to get it all packed up and give me a price on shipping. The 2 motors including shipping were $490. I feel that is a great price, due to condition and shipping costs. I could never find motors like this where I live, they are all just completely worn out.
Pat did say he had a Gale sovereign 40hp in nice shape. If anyone is interested, pm me and I'll give you his email address. I'd gladly put his full name here but I haven't asked for permission and don't want to post someone else's name all over the net without it. Either way, I really like having someone up NOrth keeping a look out for me that I feel I can place total trust in. I'm hoping to go to the Tomahawk meet and one of the Florida aomci meets so I can meet some of the outboard folks I know and highly respect, and look at some other folks' outboards. You guys that live closer to some of the aomci clubs than I do, should check out a meet sometime if you like old outboards. I hear they make super deals to people all the time there. You can see a list of upcoming events on their site (I guess I should say "our" site since I'm a member, too :)).

BTW, he ships on a pallet and shipped both motors on one pallet this time, and none of my pallet shipped motors had damage. It is VERY rare that I get a motor undamaged by the the usual shippers packed in boxes, no matter how well they're packed. It looks like they actually throw them around the truck.
I enjoyed all of your help and responses,
JBJ

F-R, I noticed I had the original aluminum baffle plate. This being a WIsconsin motor and unlikely to have seen salt water, do you think it's worth pulling the exhaust cover?

The problem with the original baffle plate is that if the engine ever overheats the extra hot exhaust will burn a hole in the soft aluminium plate. If its never been overheated you should be fine. I'm always very leary of removing exhaust covers. I have yet to remove one where I didn't break at least one screw and had to drill and tap it again.

As for saltwater motors, I don't know anything about them. There is no saltwater in Southern Ontario. I'd be afraid to remove any fasteners on them.

That's a hell of a deal. I'd like to go a big meet like Tomahawk. I still need some sort of rowboat or other knucklebuster for my collection.

That's a 1954 Evinrude Big Twin 25 hp. It looks good. Post some photos once you finish the paint and decals.
