I have a 1974 mercruiser, inline 6 cylinder,165 h.p. which I forgot how the shutters are installed, if anyone has that info I would really appreciate your help, in the form of a picture or diagram and what's entailed in reinstalling them, as I misplaced some parts, the shutters are oval,3 inch and have a rubber cover. thank you for any help.

yer supposed to take the exhaust pipe off so you can drill the rivits out of the exhaust pipe so you can insert the new shutter.

while i never recommend cheating as a way of doing work. the service manual tells you how to do it. here's the slacker trick i used, so far with success.

take yer new flapper and get some big pliers, bend it in the middle till you can slide the new flapper into the brackets. the straighten the bar out. silicon i believe is what yer supposed to use to be applied to the ends of the flapper that rest in the brackets.
i've been successful on 2 boats doing this... your choice as to if you wanna try it. like i said, no where does it say that this is an acceptable way of doing it. but to get the exhaust pipe off. yer likely gonna have to remove the engine. good luck.
