I have a 90 hp Evenrude locked in the up position in tilt. Motor runs but engine remains up. This happened once before but worked a couple days later. I had the engine up till it stopped rising, same thig as last time but I accedentaly did it again. How can I relieve what I believe to be an air lock due to low fluid with the fill plug under water and no way to get it to a slip? Any suggestions would be appreciated!

A rude expert will jump in and make this reply legitimate, but speaking for Mercs, you have an up relay and a down relay. Both are required to activate the system. In the up position, the up relay is energized providing 12v to the trim pump with the ground (to complete the circuit) being supplied by the deenergized down relay. Down is exactly the same process, just swap the relays. If one is stuck shut, or contacts are contaminated and won't close, then it can play havoc with your system. Again, it takes both to make it happen.

I want to thank all who tryed to help. I found a "bleed screw" starboard side of the engine which when unscrewed, it has a stop to prevent the screw from falling out,:) allowed the fluid to bleed back and the engine came down. Now I can get it out of the water and find the leak in the system. Thanks again!:)

Once out of the water, and with that bleed screw released, manually tilt and drop the motor with the fill cap off. Look at the fluid. It is atf, should be red. We just bled and replaced the fluid in my friends 90 and now runs fine. Some aeration of the fluid and condensation inside caused it to operate poorly. We also ran the pump quickly with the cap off to pump out as much of the old fluid. It's a pain to refill, we used an oil can with a pump and managed to get it refilled fairly well. Do that with the motor in the full up position, then cycle it sever al times and do it again...good luck!
