I'm not sure what kind of manual I should buy and would appreciate some guidance.
I just bought a used 1986 4 hp Johnson outboard (mod J4BRHCDE). I would like a user's/owner's manual. I found a book:
Johnson Evinrude Outboards 1.25-60HP 1971-1989 Repair Manual 1-2 Cylinder, 2 Stroke by SELOC, but I'm not sure if I need a Owner's manual or Service manual or what?

I have the same engine, and just striped down another engine of the same hp and year for parts. I picked up the actual factory service manual off ebay at a very reasonable price. Much simpler to read and understand when the manual only covers one engine.

Good engines, easy to work on. Best of luck

Very seldom see anything good said on here about Seloc or Clymer manuals

Copies of the OEM manuals should be avaialble from Ken Cook at www.outboardbooks.com

But they are not cheap

Well, I've Selocs for 15 years and don't have many complaints. Then again, I also have a couple Johnson service manuals from the Ken Cook Company and they are pretty informative. If you're very mechanically inclined, then Selocs will get you by just fine and the info is there, incase you pick up a different motor. They are a lot better than Clymers and Chiltons, as far as I'm concerned.
