Question on fogging oil.

I read the post on winterizing in the top secret files.
There was a reply to the post where it mentioned that running the motor dry prior to storage will seize your motor. The fogging oil would prevent this wouldn't it?

Re: Question on fogging oil.

Would running out of fuel on the water before switching tanks seize your outboard?? I have done that many times, even without fogging oil in it.

Re: Question on fogging oil.

there are screws on the bottom of the float bowls to drain the gas from the carbs, running it out of gas also runs the engine without oil, one carb always goes dry before the other, so it is not the ideal situation and is hard on the engine.

But yes, you should drain the float bowls before storage.

I've bin running my carbs dry for the past 45 years and have never had a problem. Some carbs just don't have the drain screws or there a PITA to get to.

Re: Question on fogging oil.

You cannot easity run the carb(s) dry and use fogging oil can you?

You spray fogging oil in until the motor stalls. That means the carbs are still full. If you restart to run the carb(s) dry you burn off the fogging oil!

So you drain the bowl(s) by removing the drain screw ... but only if there is one and it is accessible

What is the solution if you have no drain screw(s) on the carb(s).

I'm afraid I run mine dry (single carb) when "finishing with engines" during the season but leave it un-drained when winterising.
Not yet had to clean the carb and been doing that since 1985!

I just shut it off like any other day, then pull the plugs and spray some WD40 in there. Turn it over by hand a couple times, drain/fill the lower unit and call it good! The gas in the carb always has Stabil in it, and I only take about 3-4 months off for the winter.

No not WD40 It is a very poor lubricant. It is primarily a water displacing fluid , hence WD.

put some 2 stroke oil in a trigger spray bottle and spray that in , but you still have not given the bearings a good oiling. Fogging via the air intake is the way to do that.

Re: Question on fogging oil.

If you can't or don't want to drain the carbs, then go heavy on the Stabil Marine in your gas, fog the motor until it chokes on it to coat all those rod and wrist pin needle roller bearings and crankshaft journals and main crank bearings, spray fog oil in each spark plug hole, turn motor over a couple of times to coat everything, just leave the treated gas in carbs. My carbs have easy drain screws on them that are easy to get at so I drain mine, but with the Stabil, you should be fine. Think coating all shiny metal surfaces on internal motor parts. Good Luck!

Thanks for the input guys.
Yea. Trying to run the motor dry by vigorously pulling on the choke and trying to get the fogging oil in the carbs was a challenge.
I just let it run dry on its own. While spraying the fogging oil just before it dies. Unscrewed the the float bowl plug and let it drain then took the plugs out and sprayed a liberal amount of fogging oil, turned flywheel a few revolutions and called it a day (8months).
