Hey folks...does anyone have a carfax acct? I have a piece of car i'm trying to sell, but people want carfax, and I'm not inclined to pay $50 for one.

The vin is 6MMAP67P5YT008505, if anyone has the time/inclination, I'd be forever in your debt!

Thanks!

Re: Carfax?

I have a buddy who owned a newer Volvo convertible. They had 2 major accidents with it. MAJOR. Both times it was repaired through insurance at an insurance-coordinated body shop. Totally above board. Little while later (cuz the car was pretty well screwed) they traded it in at CarMax. CarMax ran a CarFax report on it. It came back totally clean. Worthless in my opinion.

The value in a CarFax report is not in its accuracy, but in the perception of accuracy. It is truly about as useful as asking the town drunk for advice on 50 year old single malt.

Must be a real piece of junk if you are unwilling to spend $50 and raise the price $50 to get it sold.

Oh, if it were a sure thing, I'd be all over the $50 to sell the car. But it isn't...it's just that the two...very ethnic...sounding people who called both asked about Carfax...and I know sometimes people get free reports, so I figured I'd ask around. :)

Re: Carfax?

I wouldn't give $0.02 for a carfax report ... have seen too many of them give bogus info --- both ways.

Argh.

Bit the bullet.

USAA gives 20% off, so it was only $28.

Still chaps my butt, though...the carfax reports exactly what I already knew: No friggin accidents. :(

Re: Carfax?

I did a Carfax when I bought my 96 Lumina and it came back with no accidents. After I bought it, I had the back seat out for some reason and guess what I found....piles of shattered window glass; and later, my mechanic was working on the car and asked me when I wrecked it. He then showed me how the engine was slightly off kilter. That was about 7 years ago.

I'll be turning over 200,000 miles on it in a few weeks, so go figure. I doubt I'll ever waste more money on another Carfax.

Re: Carfax?

When used for what it is, it can be a useful tool. If you read the fineprint, Carfax gleans their information electronically from all sorts of digital sources. They do not verify or make any claim as to the validity of the information, they pass that on to whichever entity provides the digital data, whether it be govt., insurance companies, etc.

I only use it as one tool in my decision-making toolbox. It can be useful to corroborate your own observations or third party info. I view the information in a carfax report through a filter, always remembering that absence of information doesn not prove the negative, e.g. just because no accident is reported, does not mean one didn't happen. If one shows up on the report, then it can be used as a negotiating point or used to help assess credibility of salesperson, e.g. salesperson: "it was only a minor fender-bender", carfax: "Billy Ray's Body Shop from 1/25/2009 to 2/25/2009, new front clip installed."

I found it most useful to determine where my last used car purchase was registered since new...helps to know whether it came from NY or FL, especially for cars only a few years old and the obvious tell tale signs of salt and whatnot are not evident yet.

Re: Carfax?

I see ads on Craigslist for people offering to run Carfax reports anywhere from $1-$5 for each report. The only problem is they get flagged and removed fairly quick.
It doesn't matter which craigslist you use since anybody in the country can run it for you and e-mail you the report.
I checked the site "search all craigslist" for carfax and autocheck reports and all of the links were dead except this one for autocheck.

Re: Carfax?

Carfax not all that great for accident reporting, as not all states are required to flag them.

Carfax is accurate on when the vehicle changes ownership.

If that car has been sitting on a dealer lot for a YEAR, it is probably sitting there for good reason. Why would somebody normally own a car for two months?

We purchase the unlimited month every time, we shop for a vehicle.

Never thought of requesting a Carfax from the seller.
