BoneHeaded Move. Please Help.

I have a mid 80's 25hp Evinrude electric start motor. No Power tilt/trim.

The other day I bought one of those hose adapters to put on the motor and run it out of water. Well, after not finding the water intake I decide to spray every hole with the hose.

Now, I have two spots on the motor leaking fluid.

I have attached pics. Both spots are leaking slowly but surely. What have I done? is it ruined?

The first pic is where it is leaking out of a very small hole close to the "check fluid level screw". The second is some bigger hole that is square and has a round tube coming out also....

Any help is appreciated!

You loosened up 2 stroke oil in the exhaust housing in the lower unit and now it's running out. Enjoy the motor, it's fine.

Thanks a lot! I thought I had just trashed a perfectly good motor. Got it from an estate. Been sitting up for 10 years. Under the "hood" it looks brand new. And it cranked on the first try with new battery!

You dont happen to know where the water intake is do you? At the sale, they had it in a 50gal drum running and spitting water fine. I tried it with a small trashcan and it wouldnt spit water. Was I not far enough up the motor?

The red arrow in your first pic is pointing to the exhaust outlet/water pickup, make sure the lower is deep enough, 50 gallon barrel works, small trash can, not so much. There are guys who say flushette's work, some say only run in barrels, I have a 50 gal barrel for motors like this.

Man, you are a life saver. I thought it was junked. One last question... There is another outlet right under where the cover meets the shaft. It is two holes and exhaust comes out there too. Is that also where the water spits out too? Is it supposed to have exhaust coming out of it?

red water pickup. yellow exhaust, green exhaust relief at idle, mist should come out of it at idle.

motor has to be run in a barrel water up to just below exhaust relief. you cannot use muffs.

Thanks a million! I now know something about my motor. Trying to explain this over the phone to a tech was a nightmare!

I am used to Tritons and 150hp+. This is my first smaller engine/aluminum boat. I love it already though. I can take it to Reelfoot lake, bumpin stumps in the shallows and not worry!

Thanks again to all that responded.

Re: BoneHeaded Move. Please Help.

TD showed you a good diagram of where water goes in and comes out. If you look inside the spout in the lower where the exhaust comes out you will see a screen, that's the water pickup, I was just simplifying it for you. Glad we could help.

Thank you both! I seriously thought I just threw away $500 in boat and motor. I am not very motor saavy, but I can build you a website. LOL :D

It sounds like you may have had trouble getting water to the pump during your test run. If so, you may have damaged the pump impeller. You really should consider putting a new one in there. Even without the questionable test run, it's a good idea to replace the impeller every few years or so.

I think the worst case scenario is that you scorched your impeller, but it's not too likely. If you did, it's less than 30 bucks for a new one. If you put it in a barrel and it pumps good, then you're good to go.

Re: BoneHeaded Move. Please Help.

On your motor, the two little holes above the waterline do indeed spit out some water, but only after the thermostat opens. It may take a minute after starting in a barrel for water to come out of these ports, and it may just be a mist, but that's normal. Water should come out the tell-tale quickly upon starting, and should have a steady stream when idling as slow as possible. If it's intermittent, or stops 'peeing' at low idle, replace impeller.

We basically have the same motor. Sounds like your impeller is at least 10 years old. My impeller fins had cracks and probably close to failure, yet in the video it pumped water very well. So I recommend changing it if you don't know when done last. Enjoy your new motor.

Re: BoneHeaded Move. Please Help.

The exhaust relief ports should be spitting water as soon as the water reaches the correct level in the midsection. The amount of water will increase and decrease somewhat as the thermostat opens and closes.

Up through 1977 the motors had only the exhaust relief as an indicator but motors since then should have the overboard indicator (tell-tale). Both should show water as soon as the water level reaches the engine and fills the midsection.

The pumps are not inherently self-priming so the water needs to be higher than that shown in the video to get a good prime initially. We like to have the water level high enough to cover the water pump before starting the motor, and, for motors that can use muffs, let the hose run before starting.

The only thing in the video that I thought was wrong, is the garage is nice and clean:D:D
