1991 cobalt

Iam looking to buy a 1991 cobalt with a volvo pents 5.7 and a duoprop out drive, boat has 580 hrs (is that a lot of hrs?). not afraid of the 5.7 engine but i dont know about the out drive. the interior is mint condition and so is the exterior. Iam looking for someone who has maybe owned or have worked on one, lots of questions

Cobalt is a great brand but this boat is also 19 years old. Rot would be the biggest concern. You will want to inspect the entire hull for rot. 580 hours on a 19 year old boat is actually fairly low. Thats only around 31 hours a year. The biggest factor will be how it was stored and frequency of maintenance. If there is no rot and it has been properly maintained then it should provide years of trouble free use. If on the other hand, they never maintained it, then you are probably buying a money pit. It would also be helpful to know if the boat has been used in Saltwater or Freshwater as this typically changes some of the parts replacement schedules on parts like manifolds and risers.

Ayuh,... Welcome Aboard Keith,....

The 350,+ the Volvo are a solid package,.. and Cobalt is a Quality brand,...
But,... Like Superpop says,... A 20 year old hull needs a Real Close inspection of All the underlying wooden structures, as Rot would be Expected...

The newer Cobalts are built with No wood, I'm not sure about a 1991 model.

My 87 Cobalt has wood flooring and stringers - some have rotted around the ski locker and I have to fix it this spring.

When you talk about checking for rot, are you just talking about the stringers and deck? I'm not sure how I would check my hull for rot except to tap around looking for soft spots.

My engine has 330 hours and runs strong so I'm going to replace the rotted wood. Most of the deck is still solid.

If it is the silver Volvo DP Drive then that is probably one of the best drives on the market, even today, for an IO application.

its white in color not silver, also iam looking for a side mount two handle control unit for forward and reverse & the throttle controls any recommandations?

That drive is fine. Just like the rest of the boat, it needs routine maintenence. Is it a salt water boat?

I have the same outdrive and engine combo and the same age. It runs great at more than double the hours.
