It was one heck of a game, saints win in OT, Farve will probably not be back in football after the pounding he took. So its Colts and Saints in the big game!

That game went with the overtime coin toss !!! Shame it has to be that way at this stage of the season.
No bias here, it mattered not to me who won, I just don't like the NFL overtime system.

Should be a great superbowl though. Hope it does not need overtime !!!:D

Agreed........OT should be at least one full quarter.

I'm not a saints fan but I have to admit I was pulling for them. 43 years and this is their first Super Bowl.

My sister is a Colts fan.......but Im gonna pull for the saints.

Thriller? I thought Fox put in the wrong tape and broadcasted the practice session of the two teams doing fumble drills. Musta been all the greasy, yummy pre-game Nawlin foods cause them boys had hellacious buttafingers.

A contest to see who could make the most mistakes followed by a coin toss to decide who won.

C'mon now, if you believe that, you have to believe that the victor in every coin toss will always be the first to score. We all know that isn't so. Quite a few things could have happened, starting with a 23 year old kid feeling the weight of an entire city worth of dreams on his shoulders. Remember Tampa?

Two very good teams battled it out, made some mistakes and sometimes forced mistakes on one another. That is what extremely competative games are about.

It is a known fact that the team that wins the coin toss win 60% of the time.

The way that the colleges do it isn't exactly the best either, it is better then the NFL

I would like to see the NFL do away with being able to kick a field goal in overtime.

Considereing that any given team in a contest that was as closely matched as this, would have a 50% chance of winning in OT, a 60% chance of winning doesn't mean much.

C'mon Jay...you aren't a Saints supporter by any chance? ;)

The discussion got hijacked to "the NFL OT format needs a booth review"
A 60 % chance based on a coin toss is a joke for a sport with the stature of the NFL.
The coin toss loser is a 20% underdog....60% - 40%. That's huge.

Football is really the only major sport where you get uncontested offensive possession to start a sudden death OT. Every other game either has a mini-battle, such as in basketball with a jump ball or in hockey, a face-off, that has to be won. Baseball just gives both teams the same amount of outs if needed.

Me, a Saints fan??? Naw! What gave you that impression?

As for the coin toss issue. I just think its a silly argument. I also think that some other equally silly argument would be put up by those who's favored team lost, no matter what the system.

I also think you can beat numbers to death to trying to explain things that happen or don't happen. Heck, the Vikings had all sort of stats in the game that should have resulted in more trips to the end zone, but they didn't get it done. On the final drive of the game, the Saints could have blown their "60%" advantage" by going 3 and out, or fumbling or whatever. Hartley could have choked - once again, the kid is all of 23 years old. None of this happened and they won. That's the way it works.

Give the Saints their due!

I think sudden death should be gotten rid of too.

...Farve will probably not be back in football after the pounding he took.

I think that last minute pick is going to eat at him to the point where he comes back for another season "do-over".

Sounds alot like marriage and divorce...

:D:D good one angus. And usually we're the underdog.

NFL OT rules the way they're for several reasons. Considering the physical nature of the game you can't extend it to double, tripple ot or the bazillion innings. TV networks have other contractual obligations to keep. Exhausted players = more injuries, non-entertaining game, more complaints from fans and players, etc...Sometime you win the coin toss and sometime you don't.

True, you don't want to extend the OT forever, but how about if the team that wins the coin toss scores on the first drive, give the other team one possession to try to score. If they don't score, they lose. If they get more points, they win. If they tie, go to sudden death after that. That would take away the 60-40 advantage without dragging things on forever. It would also force the coin toss winning team to try for a TD instead of just manouvering for FG range.

What if the coin toss was best 2 out of 3? What if there was no booth review? What if each quarter was 2 minutes longer or 2 minutes shorter? What if all teams were required to have an enclosed dome, so that no team that isn't used to extremely cold weather in places like Chicago and Green Bay, would be disadvantaged? What if? What if? What if?

You're throwing down some "Reductio ad absurdum" eh? Nicely played. The 3 "what ifs" were a bit much, though :D

Hey, rules get changed in pro sports all the time. I personally think the current NFL OT system leaves too much up to a coin toss.

Hey Jay, I took a look at what you had to say in the other football thread, and just wanted to add, I'm not saying the Saints shouldn't have won that game. I was rooting for the Vikes in that game, and I don't like the current OT rule, but the Saints are a great team and definitely earned their trip to the big show. I think it's going to be a great matchup.
