I am gonna need a full model number.
97 could be a 2.6 or a 3.1. vastly different beasts.
carbed version in 97 was a 2.6 and the 3.1L version in 97 was EFI.
both were 225.

sorry, should of checked first. however they are in fact 1996 saltwatwer series 225 TXRU models any help and info on these engines will be greatly appreciated. they have been great for the 4 years i have had them. they just love fuel over 4200 rpms.

should be an s or an L 225txru.
however the X tells us its a 25" motor which in 96 was a 3.1L motor with six carbs.
check for fuel restrictions, replace the lift pumps if they have not been done in the past 3 years.
clean the carbs, carefully test or replace the T-stats.
stuck open T-stats can drain the #6 cyl fuel bowl and create issues.

when you say the lift pumps do you mean the three on the side of engine or is there a pump prior to them? the t- stats have been changed annually in the spring , each time they are pretty well shot. so will be changing them soon.
