www.breezeworks.net may have them and yes you need new studs, longer push rods and taller valve cover.

I hope this will answer your question...

also go with the fiberglass lifters and the balsa wood pushrods for extended use above 9000 RPM.

You guys are hilarious, just looking to help the motor a little, I troll all day with it and thought it might help. The kits are cheap and it just a ford 460 head.

It might be a Ford head, but the block where the lifters go is NOT Ford, it's Mercruiser. Not sure what kit you are talking about, never heard of a roller lifter kit for a 470.

Ayuh,... Roller Rockers Don,... Not Lifters...

As noted by the above posters, without actually saying it...
Most folks who still have a runnin' 470, are more interested in just Keeping it running, rather than modifying it in any way...
But,....

It's Your boat,... Do whatever you Want...

It doesn't matter what you want to put on this block for aftermarket parts. Although it's not impossible, it's compeletly impractable.

Big Mac, download the service manual for your engine and have a read about how the valve lash is adjusted on this engine. Once you read the procedure and see the special tools you need to do it, you'll see what I mean.

I have no idea where'd you even find pushrods for this. A dealer would have to do a network search for you as they are and have been for a while all NLA.

Big D, go to the Breezeworks forum, and do a search on "roller rockers", you will have more than enough info to tackle this. Its been done over and over and there is a wealth of information there from dozens of people who have done it.

Most seem to go with Scorpion pedestal rockers (1.73 ratio). You will need a taller valve cover (or at least a spacer), some, most or all of your pushrods may be able to stay put depending on clearance. Remove the lifters, get the oil out of them and put them back to check clearance. Pushrods are still around, new, used, custom or otherwise. If you know your way around an engine at all you will have no problem with this.

Re: Merc 470 roller rockers

Thanks GUYAVERAGE, looks easy and the guys say it even runs a little smoother and quieter. Seems most people around here just want to be heard, not much help. As far as the 470, mine runs like a champ, I run 30 miles out on lake Superior, troll all day, come back 30 miles and burn about 15 gallons. I did that at least 15 time last summer and no problems. I still run the points in it, water pump seal wasnt leaking but I changed them anyway. Looking at the alt conversion but the stator is still working so I'll wait. Thanks again.

Re: Merc 470 roller rockers

your simply not going to see any performance gains.
your 4 cyl simply doesnt turn the RPM that roller rockers are designed to aid the valve train.
as far as smoother and quieter after installing them.
no way.
the original setup is a zero lash hydraulic and if working correctly is quiet anyway.
more power? not below about 6000 RPM and then only due to the decrease in friction.
your engine simply wont tolerate extended 6000 RPM runs.
the original setup in your rig is almost identical to the 460 ford setup that would run 200 thousand miles with no issues.

Re: Merc 470 roller rockers

You are probably right RODBOLT, but its January, I'm bored, just thinking of spring and getting into the water (not till May) and thought that rollers would be a neat and cheap upgrade. Still don't crash the 470, I didnt know what I had bought till I got home. I bought the boat not the motor (Wellcraft v20) and love it . The choice was I/O over O/B for me just for gas milage. Everything I looked at had old 2 strokes so I went inboard. I pulled the motor when I got it home because I found #4 cylinder 50lbs less than the rest, a teaspoon of oil made the preasure go up so I thought it was rings. Ended up the gap in the rings had all lined up, new rings, new mains change the two water pump seals, cap, rotor, plugs, wires and back in the boat. Runs like a clock all day. Boat does 30mph, but the water is usally rough anyway.
Can't wait till spring!
470 Rocks!
