This is an old video thats been all over. If you haven't seen it, I'll warn you that it's a bit shocking.

Anybody know any details? What was the captain thinking? The fate of the people on board?

No, never seen it before,

What was the captain thinking?

He was thinking upside down, or got his call to starboard wrong.

The fate of the people on board?

I am gonna guess they got wet at the very least. Hopefully they survived.

That is a small segment of a much longer video on boating crashes. I saw it quite a while ago. That particular crash happened many years ago.
