New to the forums. My best friend gave me the boat free. I have started cleaning it up, pulled the gas lines replaced them new spark plugs. There very little hard varnish in gas filter and in lines. As I am on a very fixed budget and never rebuilt a carb before, can I get away without rebuilding it ? Or should I spend the money?
Also, what else should I do before trying to start?
Sorry if it sounds like a stupid question, but this is my first boat.

Take the drain screws out of the carburetor float bowls one at a time and squeeze the primer bulb to flush the float bowls; that will help to flush debris and gel before it gets pulled into the carburetors.

Change the gear oil in the lower unit.

Its always good to treat a motor that is new to you as one that has been in long term storage; read the following: http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=158086

since I have been on this forum I am amazed at the amount of people who burn up a motor.. and it seems the two biggest reasons are over heating and dirty-colgged carbs.

if a cylinder cant get gas because of a blocked carb jet or orifice, then that cylinder isnt getting any oil either!!!

four years!!!!!!!

I dont see how you could risk not rebuilding the carbs

good luck

I'd spary some wd-40 or PB Blaster down the spark plug holes and let it sit for a day. Just in case any rust formed.

You are going to want to prove the VRO works properly. I recommend you fill the oil tank to the top, and run 12 gal of 50::1 premix fuel thru the motor. Now refill the oil tank, and it will take 32 oz oil, if the oil injection is working properly/

You might test the overheat, low oil and other alarms to make sure they work.

Also, don't forget to replace the impeller and thermostat to have a good water flow and avoid overheating it.
