Re: Johnson motor

Little known fact: The model number gives you the model year, but it is often actually manufactured in the year prior and sometimes even sold in the year prior to the model year. . .sort of like automobiles.

Re: Johnson motor

I have the same motor. My elderly neighbor said "Here.. take this and fix it." I asked what was wrong with it. He said nothing that he knew of... it ran great last time he used it in the mid 90's." Mid-90's? I popped the covers off and this thing is a beaut... it is clean as a whistle under there. I removed the stock spark plugs and cleaned them up. I cleaned the plug wires, which had old connection grease, added all new grease, and plugged everything back together.
Now... that's as much as I know about outboards. What else should I check to clean before I give it a try for the first time in 15 years? I'm tellin ya, this thing is clean as a whistle. I figure the carb could use a cleaning with some solvent probably, but does anyone have any tips? it's doubtful he has a book for it... so if anyone can tell me what else to check, and maybe how to go about a few of those things, I'd really appreciate it. I'm confident in my mechanical skill to figure the rest out.

THanks in advance..

Re: Johnson motor

I would rebuild the carb,Water pump rebuild is a must. New plug. Correct plug for that motor.

Re: Johnson motor

Good for you. Nice neighbor. On the port side of the transom bracket is the model number of the motor. This number would be helpful to us. I would put in a new impeller and give the motor a try. If the carb. was emptied of gas it might be fine for an initial start up. I would also check the gear case for water contamination and replace the gear oil before initial start up. Immediately after I would check the compression on both cylinders as the reading from that will tell you if you have a good motor or lots of work ahead. If your going to hang on to it and use it then I would do more including plugs, points, carb. clean/kit, grease, lube the re-coil etc., and get an OMC service manual for it. But, if your anything like me you want to get it running first. I hope it's a good one and the four HP is a great motor. Best of luck. Rick.

P.S. Fresh gas at 50/1 mix.

Re: Johnson motor

My motor is the same as the fella listed above. Belgium serial number (don't have it written down) but the model is J4RCUD. It's a Johnson 4hp.

Ok... perhaps I overstated my mechanical ability. Most of what was mentioned I've never done before, but like I said, I should be able to figure it out. Gear casing, carb rebuild, water pump rebuild... I'm only slightly intimidated.

I'm hoping he has a manual. He's a 91 year old WWII vet, kind of like the grandfather my grandfather wasn't, or couldn't be. He didn't GIVE me the motor, he simply asked my to get it running. He lets me use his boat too. I've already put new wooden supports on the transom, with plans to repaint the floor of the inside of his 14foot alumimun Sea Nymph dingy. I work mostly with Stainless steel in my line of work, so I'm not exactly sure how some abrasives and solvents will react with aluminum. But anyway.. this thread is about the motor. Again, I appreciate the tips and help.
