Conversion to 2-line Pressure Tank

Can a single line metal tank be easily cut to accept the guts of a two line without welding up the extra holes?

If so, which metal tanks are the best candidates.

Basically, I have a very rusted (inside & out) two line Johnson tank. I was thinking the larger assembly of the two-line tank would eclipse the holes of the single line tank.

Single line tanks are cheap...whereas the two-line are not!

Anybody ever do this?

Wouldn't it be safer and more cost effective to install a fuel pump and use a single-line system? Unless you are going for a totally original restoration, then the single-line system seems like the way to go to me. I'll PM you my story about spending a long and tense afternoon on the ICW due to a dual-line hose if you are interested. Be safe!

Re: Conversion to 2-line Pressure Tank

To be honest, I am going for original. I read a few recent threads on conversion...seems very straight forward. Additionally, I just acquired a '59 Seaking with the pump that could serve as a model. If the Lark becomes a "daily driver," I'll make the conversion.

I would love to read your story!

In theory it could be done but I certainly would not do it. You'd be welding a gas tank. You'd have to have a perfect weld to not leak. You'd have to move the airtight cap over also. Maybe you plan to move the hole top plate over from the dual? Then you'd need the new gasket/tank rebuild kit. There's a pressure relief somewhere. Make sure you dont frack it up or possible kaboom! You can get a used dual line for $50. Is it worth the effort?

Myself, I would rather install a fuel pump and convert the motor to a single line system. Since you want to stay original, it would be best to just buy another tank. I posted an ad on Craigslist wanting a dual line tank and found a good one for $10.00 so that would make it less worth the effort.:D:D

Converting the old pressure tanks to the singles is something done fairly commonly. As for the other way... that's not original and it's unsafe to boot.

I have a pressure two hose tank in GREAT shape but it goes with the 20 hp outboard engine I'm trying to sell. The tank is worth more than the engine but both go when or if they do.

I don't know for sure that what you are asking would be a bad idea, but my intuition tells me that it is. The key issue, would be the strength of the tank that was designed as a non-pressurized model. The wall thickness of the steel might not be an issue, but I would think that the seams would be.

Seaway Marine used to sell new, two-way tanks. They were a bit pricey, but if you want an authentic look, a new tank would be cool. What they were selling the last time I looked into this (quite some time ago) might have been NOS, but something is making me think that I remember the tanks being manufactured/replicated.

Here's the link, if you want to check this out:

No you can't do it...safely. The single line tank was not designed to hold that kind of pressure. It is thinner material than the pressure tank. Bite the bullet and buy a pressure tank. Post an ad for a pressure tank and someone will sell you one at a reasonable price. Ebay tanks are overpriced.

The most expensive part is the quick connect fitting. Since you already have that part you should easily find a tank-only for cheap. If you were close to me I'd hook you up with one.

+1 I would convert to a fuel pump. You could always tape a peice of hose on if you wanted it to look old..

Thanks guys!

I did not consider the wall thickness. That clearly would a design breaker! OK, I continue my quest for a reasonable one in my area and scrap my idea!

I think it's cool when someone converts a plastic tank to a pressure tank. It swells up like a poison frog bit it:D:D:D
