 ok so i cant get the out drive off(mercruiser 160), its like the slip yoke isnt sliding off the outshaft. i disconnected the bellows/boots and the shift cable... my question; is there a clip or something that i cant see holding this POS on? if someone can send pictures or tell me in detail how to get this off i would be so stoked. thanks, Rick

check that the weight of the motor is not putting to much pressure on spline shaft-usually caused by blown engine mount, or misalignment, try raising motor alittle see if it is easy to remove MOST IMPORTANT MAKE SURE DRIVE IS PLACED IN FORWARD OR DAMAGE WILL OCCUR

Re: cant get my outdrive off!!

Probably has water in the bellows and the splined shaft from the drive is rusted into the gimbal bearing. You can look to this thread http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=372907 for a few ideas. Since you probably have a snap ring holding the gimbal bearing in, I have had to pull the engine and use a sledge hammer to drive the shaft out of the gimbal bearing.
That is how to get it apart, for that old of a drive, it may be something else to find parts that need replaced. Do you have any idea what year or the SN of the drive or engine is?

Seems simple enough but as Don said:

PUT IT IN FORWARD GEAR OR YOU WILL DAMAGE IT TRYING OT PULL IT.

If you are in forward gear and it won't come off, Pull harder. But be very very careful.

if you can't crack it open at all ..its not a seized gimbal ... even if it cracks an 1/8 inch on one side and nada on the other !

what you got is a seized stud (s) ..... get some good penetrating oil like Kroil and start treating the studs ...you will soon see which one or two are causing the problem because the stud bore will be blocked by salt corrosion. this will take time ...once took me a week with daily treatments ..... if you can, back the leg up to a post and rig up a sling around the leg .... a rope works fine with a tournique ...... all you need is about 100 lbs of pulling force ... keep doing and eventually it will pop off.

ps ...leave 2 of the nuts on loose so you don't pull the thing right out so it falls on the ground.

hope you haven't got one that's really siezed ...one time had to pull the engine ....take the whole outdrive assembly off ....get the leg on its side and keep pouring kroil in the stud indents ...can't remember how long that took but better than trashing the leg.

good luck
