Post the model number that you will find on the port side of the transom bracket. We can all go from there.
Was it peeing before the water pump change ?? does it have a tell tale on it ??
No need to prime as long as the motor is on muffs (with the water turned on) or submerged in a body of water.
Did you replace the pump yourself ???

Re: 70hp johnson waterpump

i am currently changing the pump on my 1977 johnson, 70EL77S.

before the change, there was only a tiny stream of water coming out of a hole just above the lower unit. it was too low for a tell tale in my opinion. there are also two holes right under the engine cover facing straight back. those had tiny droplets coming out but nothing compared to a steady stream.

where would the tell tale hole be in my engine?

p.s. when i removed the lower unit, the pump was a mess and looked totally burnt up. havent recieved the parts to install the new kit.

Dont know for sure but that may not have a teltale or pee stream. If not all water will exit through those ports as mist at idle and more of a flow at wide open and the other will exit with the exhaust under water. That is if there is no teltale like the 71 25 hp i use to have, if there is a TT open the hood and look for a little like 1/4 inch rubber hose that exits through the motor mid section to a little disk with a hole in it that pees a stream, which could be blocked by dirt daubers.
Oh either way you will have those 3 ports or slits that should always mist water while running if pump is good, just drops or steam coming out of them and you know you have a problem.

here is a pic of the engine...

the two holes in the back are where the droplets and steam came out of.

there is no hose come off the engine that could be a pee hole
