Re: Hand guns

If considering home defense.. consider the home repair bill when you shoot someone. Use a 12G shotgun with buckshot and you'll be replacing 1/2 the walls behind the guy. And you sure won't get the reimbursed by the crook. A tile entryway is always a good idea, too ;)

But nothing puts the fear of God in a person more than the sound of an 870 or a Mossburg 500 being racked. If the intruder knows that sound your only repair bill will be for a new storm door that he runs right through on the way out:eek:

Maybe I should just record the racking sound on a cd and just play it as soon as I hear an intruder :D

I likes me a Winchester Model 12, especially a police model that has seen a lot of use and is well worn. You can fire them and hold the trigger as you rack the slide forward, she will fire the next round. Just hold the trigger and rack fast. I've seen them be emptied in skilled hands faster than a guy can do it with an autoloader.

... Are you shooting to kill? ...

I'm sure most of the guys on this site understand this, but some may not and should be told, there are only two reasons to use a firearm, one for target practice to remain proficient at using the weapon and the other is to kill. Firearms are not for show, not for intimidation and not to scare. Any weapons training will explain this with a little more forceful demonstration.

Re: Hand guns

The correct answer to that is "shoot to stop the threat".

Agreed, with the understanding that something or someone is going to die. Don't get me wrong, I own firearms, am trained to use firearms and believe in the right and purpose to own firearms. Too many stories about kids dying over a car battery or facing murder charges for only meaning to scare. I've had kids tell me they can shoot to wound. I reply with there is no such guarantee.

Re: Hand guns

Get a 22 LR first to practice with.
If you are not worried about concel carry get a ruger mark 2 semi auto. .

or a Ruger Mark I or Mark III....They are all basically the same gun. The differences are the I only hold 9 rounds and doesn't lock back on empty like the II and III. The III has a loaded chamber indicator that the I and II doesn't have.....They are all great guns

I just picked up a sweet 1965 blued Mark I Target a couple of weeks ago. It sure looks nice in my safe next to the stainless Mark II Target in the same barrel length.

It would go good with the motion activated barking dog systems that are already on the market.:D

The tile entryway still helps when he pees himself. :)

Re: Hand guns

I am a NRA Certified rifle, pistol, and shotgun instructor. I teach NC and VA CCH classes, NRA Women on Target events, NWTF Women in the Outdoor events, and NWTF Jakes events. I have seen many first time shooters, and the worst thing you can do is start out with a large caliber. The second worst thing you can do is start out with a double action only handgun (which the Glock is). It requires a LOT of practice to maintain trigger control and sight alignment while pulling a long trigger. Most of the time this results in frustration and loss of interest.

Start out with an exposed hammer double action .22. Learn sight alignment and trigger squeeze with the hammer back. Once that is mastered lower the hammer after every shot and pull it all the way through. Then decide if DA only is a handgun you would like to carry.
With the exposed hammer you have the option of cocking it for a more precise shot if time allows.

I carry a Glock 23, a Ruger P89, a Kel-Tech .380, or a North American .22. All have advantages and disadvantages. When you are ready to purchase one for CC, go to gun shops/shows and handle all of them. Think about how you are going to carry and keep it concealed. Don't let cost be a factor. If you buy one that for some reason you are not comfortable carrying everywhere you go, all the time, it may be left at home or in the truck when you most need it.

First time I shot a Glock, I let it bite me. Only took once though

Funny- the same thing happened to me the first time I used a Glock.
Hmmm....maybe it's a design flaw. :D

Re: Hand guns

Well, this past weekend I picked up a gun for my wife (actually it was something I wanted ;)) at a local gun show. It gave my wife the chance to handle many various hand guns and I steered her to the quality ones. The grip is a bit smaller then my Glock 23 which is good for my wife.

Sig P229 40 S&W and I also picked up a nice DeSantis holster.

It will make a nice companion to my Glck 23 40 S&W

Made the wife feel good because I also got her a new headset ;) I like to do things right.
