Hello folks.... I've searched all over and even posted in the Force Outboards Forum as that is what type of motor that I have but I've turned up no help so hopefully I'll find some advice here.

I'm swapping out my old quicksilver commander 3000 control unit for a brand new commander 4000 control unit and I've got a question for your consideration and possible help.

Will the existing Generation 1 control cables work with the new Generation 2 control unit that I've just purchased and if so is it a direct changeover or will I have to make adjustments to them once installed....

Thank you folks (in advance) so much for your help!!!!!

Chuck Holt...

If your new control is Gen 2 then your cables will not work. Is your control box a concealed mount or panel mount, and was the old control a old teflex or an actual mercury control cause that will make a difference also.

It is a panel mount... it's been removed and discarded and as for the original manufacturer... I'd ASSUME that it's an actual mercury control as the boat is a 2000 Procraft 170 Combo and the engine is a 1999 Force. A little tiny ball bearing wore a groove inside of the shifter housing thereby disengaging the neutral safety switch unless you shifted into reverse. I took it completely apart and even considered filling in the worn groove with some sort of metal epoxy or something. I ended up stealing a brand new Gen. II Commander 4000 off of Ebay for 85.00 so here I am. I also am assuming that the trim switch from the old shifter will work???? Thanks for your input and anymore will be greatly appreciated.

I thought Mercman had it covered, GENII shifter won't work with older cables, you need replacement GENII cables. The GENII cables don't have the "barrel" on the shifter end, just a groove cut around the cable end. If you search for GENII mercury cables on the internet a few places will show the difference. I got my GENII cables off Ebay, $15-20 a piece.

Does your 4000 shifter have the trim switch built into the handle? I'd assume you can adapt the trim switch in the 4000 shifter to work with your trim system. I didn't have problems, but was working with a Mercruiser I/O.
