well i was just cleaning the boat today. washing the dirt out with the hose and upon preping the motor i took the tiny tach out and noticed some black and grey spots on the cowling. it was cracking and falling apart. looked burned. i though uh oh! looking inside and the wires coming from the rectifier are all burned. one is completely disconnected and hanging in the air. im just so glad nothing caught on fire and burning my whole engine.

ive been wanting to take the whole recifier system out since when it was in the driveway it wasnt charging at all even if i revved it up high. plus my electric choke isnt working either.

id say that the poor insualtion from the wires cause some to touch making it hot and burning the remaining insulation and tape there.

resolution! remove all wires going to and from rectifier! remove rectifier and cut and tape up the ends of the 2 wires from the stator charging unit! making sure they dont ever touch!

question! will removing the rectifier affect my starting system at all?

next problem to assess! replace motor mounts! step one! remove and wires or lines going to power head! step 2 remove power head! 3! replace mounts upper and possibly bottom if in poor shape and price is right! 4 installl everything! recheck work! test out!

step 5! hope nothing else goes wrong:D

Re: bad news

I have a late model 90 3 cyl. My wiring harness shows ground, 2 red output wires to the battery, 2 yellow stator input wires and a gray wire to the engine harness which winds up forward at a tachometer/accessory plug. Apparently it is there for installing a dash mounted voltmeter if you want to watch it.

So, from that I'd say no, but your battery won't charge so depending upon how often you start your engine or if you run running lights and all, you will have to keep an eye on it's charge level. You may find that you have to charge it frequently and replacing the rectifier/regulator is the best solution.

My 2c,

Mark

Re: bad news

only thing other than starting the motor i would use the battery for is dead weight and running naviagtion lights. its a deep cycle/starting model.

i have a feeling that my stator might also be bad too. i still am not sure why it burned up like that!

i can always charge the battery. i might invest in a solar panel so i wont have to take the batter out to charge it.

i use a tinytach as a tachometer so it runs on its own power. no need for any of the assessorys and toys.

has a backup pull starter just in case;) plus it's much easier to pull than my 35hp johnson!

Re: bad news

Remove the stator under the flywheel or tie BOTH leads together..Or you likely have the "stack" rectifer as I call them, if your stator wiring is good just install the newer style rectifier...

but then i would have rewire everything:mad: the stator has goo coming out from it too:eek:

by the way i have the old style red rectifier with plates on it!

i feel that the best thing is invest in a solar panel charger and take the wiring and rectifier out to prevent any future wire problems. i will also recheck my started wiring.
