plastic tube at impeller pump outlet

Above the pump in my (Alpha I) stern drive there's a short (4") plastic tube which fits into the outlet on the stern drive water pump and (when the lower unit is fitted to the upper unit) fits over a smaller diameter copper or brass tube in the upper unit. There seems to be no seal between the plastic tube and the metal tube in the upper unit. Is this normal? I don't understand what keeps the water from leaking out through the gap between the two tubes; it's just a loose slip fit.

it's just a plastic guide tube to help with assembly. that's all it does. the water transfer flows through the copper pipe that is sealed at the waterpump housing and the water pocket cover in the upper...

If I remember from when I took mine apart it is just a slip joint

As Ziggy says, it's just a guide when putting the upper and lower together. it makes the copper tube fit into the seal in the pump housing.
Not a slip joint or any othe kind joint.

sorry Don S. That is what I meant by a slip joint. Called it the wrong term.

Re: plastic tube at impeller pump outlet

When replacing the impeller in my mercury R-type outdrive, I found that the guide tube was melted and deformed at the top. I left the guide tube out when I reassembled the unit. I get the impression from this thread that this is ok. Is that right?

Thanks,
Jeff
