Problem with a Yamaha 70 hp tilt switch

I have an '02 70 hp yamaha, I take impeccable care of it. Just pulled it out of the garage to run it (first time in a couple of months). The down tilt/trim works fine. About half the time I press the up tilt/trim switch, I get a click but no tilt. You don't hear the motor engage.

It does this both on the motor cowling switch and the remote switch on the throttle box. I looked for any obvious loose connections and found none.

Any advice? Thanks in advance.

Is your battery fully charged ??? Loose connections at the battery ???

No, it seems that it would have done it on down tilt as well if it were a loose connection at the battery. I checked that anyway.
But I appreciate the advice.

Try switching the up and down relays and see if the problem changes.

As above, make sure the battery is fully charged. It takes more current to raise than lower. If the relay clicks as stated the switches are ok.

The relay reverses polarity for up/down. Try hooking the trim motor power leads directly to a test battery. Light green to neg, blue to positive to raise,
the opposite to lower.

If the motor runs in both directions probably the relay, but check all of the grounds.

If you have access to a DC clamp on ammeter, check to see if it is pulling amps when it just ckicks. If it does it means the motor is binding.
If it does not pull amps, then there is a problem with the relays or a connection.

Re: Problem with a Yamaha 70 hp tilt switch

I appreciate all of the good advice. The battery was fully charged. I had to make about 3 attempts to start the motor since it had not been run so long. The battery did that without slowing down so I could probably rule that one out.
I guess I need to see if it is drawing any amperage. The problem has gone away for now. So I would probably say it's either the TT motor or a relay. I think I have been calling the relay a solenoid. I could probably replace that and see if the problem continues for very little $. Hope it's not the motor. Is that something I could replace at the house or does it involve a lot of experience switching one out?

Thanks for all the help fellas.
