'91 evinrude only starts when it wants to....

hey guys, I have a 1991 evinrude 150hp xp and it just seems like when it doesnt want to start it wont, sometimes i have no trouble at all starting it right up but others times i can go thru both batteries just trying to crank it. I took it to a shop and they said it was the power pack but i know a thing or 2 about motors and if it was the power pack it seems like it wouldnt ever start at all......another weird thing about this motor is that if i get it running and warmed up, i dont ever have a problem cranking it up at will, never actually took it fishing and had trouble starting it once i ran it for a littl while in the morning. If anyone has had similar probs and has any input please let me know. I;m gonna check all the spark plug wires tomorrow. i'd just hate to drop 300 bucks on a power pack and find out i dont need it.

could be the power pack...if you have a DVA voltage tester you can trouble shoot it. Could be coils, plugs, wiring, stator. But first thing is to eliminate fuel and compression,, first 2 things that need to be checked. first get a new set of the recommended Champion plugs. .030 gap. get a spray bottle with a little premixed fuel/oil and try spraying a little into each carb and see if it cranks when you spray fuel, this will test to see if injector is working. Then check compression.. then we will look at ignition. let me know what you find

When you crank and crank and the engine will not start- are the spark plugs wet or dry?

That the symptoms of a bad timer base, one minute it works next it dont.

I have a teenager with the same problem.
