Re: 1972 50HP Electric hydraulic Shift problem

I recommend posting a photo of the mating surfaces of the clutch dog and the gears. If you can do that, I think that both F_R and Rodbolt can probably give you some advice as to whether they are merely worn a little, or in need of attention.

Should you need to replace the clutch dog, they are still available, but are $131.12!

Thanks jay merrill, Here's a link to my pictures. I tried everything and could not get them to upload so I hope this works. I know its not like holding them in your hand but any advise would be appreciated. Should I replace them, clean up the edges, or just leave alone. I've been searching for parts and all I can find are soft parts no hard ones.
Thanks Again, Ray

Re: 1972 50HP Electric hydraulic Shift problem

I can only see one pic )one side of the clutch dog), but it looks pretty good to me. We really need to see both sides of the dog from an angle (not top down) so we can better see the wear. We also need to see the inner face of the gears, so that we can see the wear on the tabs there.

An easy way to post a pic here is to go to it on your photo hosting site, maximize it and then copy the URL. Paste that in the body of your post and put "
" at the end. Don't put the quotes - I only inserted them to idicate the text needed and to keep the iboats server from treating the characters like an html code.

Re: 1972 50HP Electric hydraulic Shift problem

that sticking piston was most likly the issue.
hydraulic pressure forces it to N and R, spring pressure moves it from R to N and from N to fwd. just depends on if the solinoids have closed 1 port,N, or two ports,R, both pump ports open and the spring moves the piston fwd and locks the fwd gear to clutch.
grit can and will get them, water in to oil caan stick them and incorrect fluid can swell the piston oring as can age.
age usually has a symptom of reverse loss due to excessive oring leakage but not always.
make sure your new seal kit has the piston oring, last one I bought from BRP did not. had to buy it seperatly.

Re: 1972 50HP Electric hydraulic Shift problem

Thanks for all the help!

I finally got my lower unit reinstalled. I narrowed it down to the piston sticking so I cleaned and refinished the interior where the piston moves. After doing this it slides back and forth much easier. I cleaned it up installed all new seals/ orings etc.

Can some one tell me the capacity of oil that this 1971 50HP takes? I'll let you no how it goes.

Thanks Again, Ray

Oh ya I found out its a 1971 model not 1972.

Re: 1972 50HP Electric hydraulic Shift problem

Hey ARayT

Was this the whole problem? I have exact same symptoms and problems.

I have the 1972 version of this motor (model 50R72C), 1971-1972 have same technology.
I have the workshop repair manual to this engine as pdf if you want it. You may not need it anymore hahah

waiting patiently for your answer :)
