1977 115 johnson shift problem

i have a 115 johnson that will not shift out of forward i have droped the lower unit and i can push the shift rod up and down but it says in forward no nuturl or reverse this is a hydrolic shift trype does anyone know what to do to fix it?

Make sure that the gearcase is full of oil. There is no adjustment on the shift rod itself, but the barrel swivel at the top should be no more than two revolutions out from gently seated.

ok i drain the oil and it was thick and looks like it might have water in it

The oil is normally thick. Milky oil would be a better indicator of water intrusion. Are the linkages hooked up correctly?

i have the lower unit off the motor and you can push and pull the stift rod freely but stays in forward gear

This is a 20" standard hydro-mechanical gearcase, correct?

Are you turning the driveshaft while moving the shift rod? Is the gearcase filled with high viscosity oil so that the hydraulic assist can work?
