65 evinrude 9.5 carb replacement?

So, despite the general consensus that most carb problems can be solved by a rebuild and not replacement, I still think I need to replace the carb on this guy. The guy I got it from dropped it while working on it, and it broke the top part of the carb, where the choke is, clean off!

He told me it worked fine before that, and I believe him-- why would you give away a non-working motor and lie about why it doesn't work? Anyway, I've never really done this level of service on an outboard. Looking at carb rebuild tutorials, I feel like I'd be able to replace the carb. Anybody have any ideas on where I would go about obtaining this part? Also, I know several of you have spent time working on these motors before, so if you have any advice/emotions about it, all of that is welcome as well!

Also, out of curiosity, did much change partswise during the decade or so this motor was made?

Thanks!

The 1965 carburetor is a little different than the ones used from 1968 on, so if you want everything to match, you will need carburetor assembly #0379168. You might find a NOS one at sea-way.com or at crowleymarine.com or check some salvage yards.

Call Tim's outboard w/the model number of the outboard. They'll likely have a replacement. You probably don't need the bowl, just the upper carb body. 218-682-2331. Put in forward gear and advance the throttle to get to that one carb mounting bolt.

Interesting. You say "if you want everything to match." Can you or anyone else speak on putting a later carb in this motor? Does it still work? I'm more curious at this point, I haven't had a chance to search for the "correct" one with the above links yet.

The newer carburetor assembly #0385843 will fit right in, but you will need the newer idle needle to go with it, and a way to support the needle.

Looking at pictures of both variety, I see what you are talking about. I'm assuming the needle is the thing adjusted by the "mix" knob:

Sucks, because looking at both, it seems like that is the only difference that I can see! Hopefully I'm able to find the correct carburetor.

Also, now that I have posted a picture, to explain better, the part that is missing is the whole top of the carburetor. You can see how (on either picture) it looks like there is a top piece attached to the bottom piece, and the entire top piece is gone. I'm guessing the guy broke part of it, and just discarded that entire half of the carb.

If the carburetor is OK it will work. You need to get a carburetor kit from your dealer - #0382048.

Thank you all for so much help. I wouldn't have made it even this far on my own.

Is there a tutorial on rebuilding the carb on this particular motor? I thought I saw one, but I can't find it anymore. I know there are a bunch of generic ones, and I figure those will be fine if I am mistaken.

Also, I have a 1967 of the same motor. It looks like it has the "late" mix adjuster as shown above. Must mean someone must have put a new carburetor in at some point...

I don't know what they used on the 1967; I don't have a parts manual for that year.
