Considering our entire population is less than California, it was a lofty goal. But, I think we are holding our own.

...and Germany and Norway and Russia...

The "Own the Podium" campaign is an ill-conceived disaster. Don't get me wrong, some halfway decent funding for our superb athletes is very much in order, but how about doing it consistently and quietly behind the scenes across many years then let the results show for themselves.

As much as I'm really enjoying the Olympics and I think our country is doing a nice job as host, Own the Podium is just an embarrassment and puts unfair pressure on our great guys and girls already giving it their all.

Considering her population, Canada has nothing to be ashamed of.

Don't let the ill-advised idea of "owning the podium" dilute the honor due to great performances by great athletes.

"own the podium" was probably set to give reason to cheer. quite simply a pep talk at the onset for a good showing. the results are not a surprise but there was a "charge of energy" for awhile.

when you're down 5-0 with 1 minute left, you say go for the gold not screw it let's go home.

it made the olympics fun, and gave the athletes something to strive for.

But a very expensive one.

From the get go, I thought that was the most ill conceived mantra or whatever they want to call it. It completely flies in the face of the point of this competition...or any competition for that matter.;)
As previously stated the likelihood of a country with the population of Canada (32 million people) ever dominating a world event by numbers is pretty low.
What I think is reasonable is to always try to punch above your weight and I think we usually do. I always think about us competing primarily against the Scandinavian countries on that angle.....so the race is on to catch Norway.
Regardless, that will be the last time tho' anyone hears that phrase (own the podium) put before any program around these parts...thankfully.
All Good

We will always have the highest regard for our neighbors to the north. I hope you do well and come back for another chance at gold.

Considering results in previous Olympics held in Canada that never yielded a Canadian gold medal, I think the Canucks are doing exceptionally well in this Olympics.

Good for them!

I think too much is made of nationalism in the Olympics, but Vancouver and Canada can be extremely proud of the show they have put on so far, and as near as I can tell with so many events being judged and as such a bit subjective, they've been remarkably free of any judging controversy.

Congrats, Canada!

Canada may not "own the podium", but they're only 1 gold behind the US and Germany, and that's not a head-hanging position to be in.
