I'm in the process of purchasing a boat that is Coast Guard documented out of Arizona. Does anyone know if I will be exempt from Michigan state sales tax on this purchase? Also, can I register this boat in Michigan to get an MC number so I don't get hassled by every cop boat I pass this summer?

I don't know MI law; but, I'll bet you will have to pay MI.

Missouri has a specfic law that specifies a "sales tax equivalent amount" to be paid by USCG documented boats.

So, I will bet MI has a similar requirement.

I will also bet the facts are on the internet in the Michigan.gov site.

I am curious as to why it is coast guard documented vessel in arizona? They have boat registration in arizona, alot of california owners register there boats there to save money. I would have thought it should have a "az" number. just wondering?

You don't have to display a state registration number if it is CG documented. I understand this is just one of many reasons that people have a boat documented.

I could tell you but I'd have to kill you.

This is a good day. It started with Tea Parties, detoured by Toyota, and now only one potential death threat! I usually get more before my morning coffee (from my wife of course...:p)

And, by the way, thanks.

RJ, I had the same question but was afraid to ask it. But I am not afraid of death threats, because I know where Jimmy Hoffa is buried!

In GA transactions between individuals are exempt from Sales Tax. However I purchase a boat in FL from a dealer in August which I paid sales tax on the trailer as per FL law but not the boat. I got a bill from the State of GA after registering the boat with the state. GA wants the difference in the taxes on the whole transaction. I got a bill for $1700.00. Two things certain in Life Death and Taxes!
