long story short and to the point.

had the lower unit repaired 2 seasons ago. ring pinion and bearings.

pulled drain plug out today and found 3 1/4 inch size pieces of metal on the magnet. They were very thin and appear to look like chunks of a shim.

The oil came out clean without any metallic flakes or shavings. no water.
Lube has been changed each 6 months.

repair shop said it sounds like it may be part of the shift dogs or cogs?
Let it be for a few trips and check lube and magnetic drain plug for more metal.
may not be any concern but keep an eye on it.

comments? opinions? thoughts? sugestions?

thanks in advance.

Post photos of the bits of metal... as the man said, it may be nothing.... But then again, it could be serious and you've caught it before it gets too big.... Need to see the bits of metal...

Hey guys, what's the matter? Isn't your crystal ball working?:D

On a serious note, I'd get it pulled down and find out where the chunks of metal came from. About the only thing I can think of it could be is bearing cage material, and that ain't good.

Unfortunately, I don't have crystal balls... :(:(:(

And I would subscribe to the same serious note....

Re: 87 black max lower unit

ran the boat today and at the ramp I checked the lower unit for metal shavings.
found some more. again about 1/8 or 1/4 inch. really thin.
My buddy described it as almost like aluim foil.

it is soft, thin and you can fold it in you fingers.

this time he wiped the metal away on his pants before I got the camera. arrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

Re: 87 black max lower unit

I am not sure how to ask this but gonna give it a try.

Is there any possible way the problem can be from the shift controls?

I would like to know all of the possible causes for such a short life of the lower unit.

what is the purpose of the button on the remote control that get squeezed in when you go in and out of gear?

what should happen when I push that button in?

That's what I like, a tryer. :D

Without pulling the gear housing apart to find out what's breaking, it's difficult to summize why it broke.

See answer above.

If you are referring to the button on the top of the control handle, then that is to stop the lever being pushed into gear accidentally.

what should happen when I push that button in?

If you are referring to the button in the centre of the control lever , that is to disengage the shift, so you can increase the revs without the engine being in gear.
