Need help with motor decision

I was ice fishing with a good friend today and the conversation included his new boat. Last season he damaged his hull and consequently purchased an '07 Tracker V17 to replace it. He didn't realize it needed a long shaft. He has a short shaft '06 Yamaha 115. Buying or trading for a replacement is not looking viable. From what I have read, an extension is possible but I don't know from where or how much coin. I've read about jack plates and transom brackets. Another thought, but not my favorite is modifying the transom. What are your thoughts on the best way to go.

Re: Need help with motor decision

A jack plate to raise the engine (long shaft being used on a short shaft boat) is ok.
Using one to lower an engine 6 inches doesn't sound good, as the powerhead will be close to the waterline, or below if a wave comes along.

Modifying the transom does the same thing.
Both may cause problems with tilting the motor up.

If a motor extension kit is available from Yamaha, it will cost some bucks.
Will include a new driveshaft, shift linkage and water tube extension.

Are you sure you measured things correctly?
Can't find any info that Yamaha made a short shaft ( 15" ) in the 115hp .

They did make a 20", and a 25" model.

Thanks Roscoe. I'll be seeing him tomorrow and I'll get the serial and model #s to run. Motor is a 4 stroke I know
UPDATE..I've done some more checking, and you are correct, it is a long shaft. The problem is the boat has a 25" transom and requires an extra long shaft. Help still needed.
