I am fairly new to the boating world however I have a few posts here that have helped me in the past. So here we go!

I recently bought a 1963 Bigtwin 40 hp with good compression for $70. 100 on both cyl. When the motor was removed from the boat it seems someone cut all controls to remove the motor, even the throttle and shifter. <---dumb, but whatya gunna do! Along with that, the wiring harness was cut about 2 feet from the motor. All the wiring in the motor case is still is tact. There are 5 or 6 different colors that I don't know what they would go to. Obviously the BIG red and black i know, but the rest I dont.

I want to see if this motor runs, but I think these wires might have to be hooked up to something ie: (control box)

What control box would work?
Which wires are required, and which ones are not?

Thanks in advance

I hate to say it, but that sounds like a stolen the motor.

Thats what I thought after I got it home, but the guy I bought it from had a johnson 40 similar year sitting right next to it. It looked like someone used some parts from it.

The control box might not have even come off this specific motor. It doesn't have any electrical compenent on it, just mechanical (shifter / throttle).

Yea, that motor is hot. It only takes 5 minutes or less to unhook everything correctly. The throttle and shifter cables actually take about the same amount of time to remove correctly as it does to cut.:D:D

Next, you'll probably find the ID tags missing.:eek:

Another common feature on a stolen outboard. Unfortunately, stolen outboards are far easier to get lost in the crowds, than say like boats and cars, because there are no numbers in any system.

Nope all ID tags are in tact. SN and Model number are there. I was hoping the actuall issue at hand could get some attention instead of people trying to convince me that I bought a stolen motor.
Does a possible stolen motor negate me from getting any reliable assistance?

No, not at all. After all, it's not your fault.:D

The attachment below could give you some good ideas on rewiring things back up. The years are different, but things should basically be the same. Someone could chime in and give you a more accurate wiring diagram.

I hope this helps:cool:

Much thanks, for that 1946Zephyr

I am still wondering about these 2 questions

What control box would work?
Which wires are required, and which ones are not?

mottt,
you said you just want to see if she runs.
I assume the pull start works since you checked compression?
Else, you could jump start the motor.

Just hook 12v up to the starter with jumper cables from a battery. Touch the engine block with the black jumper cable (last) as it will spark. Wear safety glasses.

edit: Be sure to disconnect the cable harness first.

So nothing in the control box would stop me from running this motor?
No kill switch or wires for ON/Run Position

Put it in nuetral, manual choke, give gas and go, right?

BTW what is the gas mixture for this motor? 25:1 or 50:1

Does this motor have a twist knob type throttle control, a manual choke
and a stop button?

If you have these things (mentioned above), I would just pull start until you get the wire harness figured out.

25:1 on the fuel/oil mix.

Does this motor have a twist knob type throttle control, a manual choke
and a stop button?

1) It has a small lever that reads: SLOW, START, FAST - near where a tiller handle would be.

2) A lever near the carb that reads manual choke, auto choke, and something else that I can remember.

3) I don't see a stop button

OK. So you have everything you need except for a stop button. Maybe one of the experts can figure out the wiring for the Stop button.

edit:
the Stop button, is the black button on the right in pic.

2 black wires 1 coming from each breaker point in that harness, a momentary switch will work, when the buttom is pressed it will ground out the coils. They are normally wired to the 2 "s" terminals on the ignition switch. It you just want to test put your hand over the carb throat to choke it out once running.

Really not much to it, I did a 64 in the summer, I mated it to a later model control, 5 wires if memory serves.

As far as controls go, you can use just about any two lever boxes with Johnson or Evinrude name on them. They didn't change the connectors for many years.
