Lower unit oil Johnson 70/1981

Is there any particular reason for filling from the bottom plug? When i change gear oil in my motorbikes i drain through the bottom and fill through the top until the oil starts pouring over; then i wait a while and drain the bottom two ounces to get rid of any gunk that settled and top off again.

Takes too long, and you can't be sure that there are not pockets of air when you fill from the top.

with much mess and effort oil successfully replaced. it was dark but not foamy or milky, oh and it smelled like @$$; that's a good sign, right?
