Hi Folks,

I managed to get the flywheel off of my 6hp johnson but can't figure out how to get the ignition plate off. any ideas?

Im thinking 2 phillips head screws through the plate by themselves (near the center) and 1 long one (phillips) in each coil?

Precisely! plus mag plate linkage disconnect, and perhaps kill switch wires disconnect.

Your armature plate is held in place by four philips head scews. Two are found on the top of the coil laminations (1 each) and two are located on the armature plate, near each set of points. The rest of the screws (coils & ignition parts) should be straight slot screws.

The four screws fasten into the armature plate retaining ring, which is held in place by the brass armature plate support. When you remove the four philips head screws, disconnect the throttle control link and lift the armature plate, you will see these parts.

Be aware of the fact that the armature plate retaining ring moves in a circular fashion. This is what allows the armature plate to be rotated by the throttle control. Try to leave the retaining ring exactly as it was, when you lifted the armature plate. This will make reassembly easier, because the armature plate will be in very close to the required position, when you reinstall it. Its not the end of the world if the ring moves a little, but you will have to "fiddle" a little, to get the screws to line up with the threaded holes in the ring.
