motor starts easy when I first start out at the beginning of the day, after running it about an hour or so, if I shut it off and set for a short period of time, it will not start, it will crank over fast but acts like ti's not getting fuel, I let it set for awhile and seems like it cools down and then it will finally start and run great till I shut it off again. same thing happens. seem like water stream coming from water pump is real weak. can anyone help me with this problem I changed plugs several times?

Re: 1980 100hp johnson 4 stroke

welcome to iboats.
1st it is a 2 stroke motor not 4 stroke, so i hope you have been mixing oil in with your fuel. it sounds like you float needle valves are leaking, and flooding you motor, trying to start it, clean it out some, then waiting allows the fuel to evaporate. are you using you fast idle lever when starting it, if not try it.

Re: 1980 100hp johnson 4 stroke

thanks tashasdaddy, I know it's a 2 stroke, meant to say 4 cyc. can I fix that problem myself, and how to? also i'm concerned about the amount of water spraying out of water pump, just a little stream even at high rpm's or at cruisin speeds I live on lake erie, northern oh. I'm also using amsoil synthetic 2 stroke oil. have time to work on it, lake erie is froze over right now!

Agree with the TD on the float valves.
On another note you should service your entire cooling system if it has not been done for a while. Overheated motor and Lake Erie is not a good combination.

thanks ken, do I have to pull lower unit off to service colling system, or get to water pump? I't hasen't been done for 2 seasons. and how do I fix my gas leak problem? You do have to feel confident when heading out on lake erie! thanks for the info.

The impeller sits atop the lower unit. You have to pull the lower unit. 6 bolts and disconnect the shift shaft under the bottom carb. If your telltale stream is weak, you might have some debris in that outlet nozzle in the lower cowling. That is not unusual and they are easily cleaned out.
