I just found this forum while ordering parts and from what few threads that I've read its an awesome place to find some great info on keeping the older motors on the water. I have a nice running 15hp Evinrude on my 14' jon boat that I'd like to paint the top cover to clean it up a bit. Does anybody have any suggestions as to type of paint and can I do a good job with spray cans? I don't want to spend a fortune on buying paint in large amount to paint only the top. And I want to add a kill-switch to it for safety, has any else done this to theirs? Thanks to anyone who responds, it is well appreciated!

Spray cans for paint will be OK. Be sure to follow manufacturer's instructions for temperature. Decals are also still available if you want to go so far as to completely strip and light sand, etc. They'll set you back a couple bucks, but, with new paint underneath, it'll look sweet.
I also did a kill switch on mine (1979, too). It's easy. Most likely you will want to terminate the ignition wires with fast-on spade terminals liike those used on speakers. I'd wait to buy the switch first so you don't double your work. I tucked the wire underneath the rail and ran it to the dash. Depending on the type of swith, you need to make sure you wire "normally open" and have the unit short the ignition when activated. If you wire normally closed, you won't start! Also, before you take it out, make sure it works.
You can do it!

Re: '79 15hp Evinrude re-paint?

OMC sells white paint that will redo that cover just fine. I sand , primer, paint and clearcoat all mine and then find the decals from Nana's or a gent named Dave Shabestari who can make almost any decal you want. I'm not a huge fan of nymarine unless its a 100% restore colour, his shipping rate is more than the paint which is unfortunate being most cans of paint are $10, a can of his green mercury paint was priced at ove $50 a can. His hands are tied as he has to use a licenced courier for paint instead of the post office. I will still buy from him as I want an exact match but for a 79 Evinrude Omc paint will do just fine.
