Best way to seal outboard mount holes?

I had to remove my o/b and remount it in the same holes. Is there a best technique for sealing these bolts/holes? I've read of guys installing pvc pipes(as sleeves) in the holes to prevent water seepage into the transom core, then sealing the outer edges of the pipe. Thats seems like a good idea, but IMO the weight of the outboard on the bolts pushing down on pvc pipes would potentially crack them and allow water intrusion. what do you think? i think i'm keeping my boat moored this season and i really really really want to seal it good. thanks!

Coat the bolts and holes in 3m 4200 and you will have a good seal. WARNING if you use 3m5200 you may never get the bolts out again!!

Do not use silicone.

If the holes are not enlarged and inner transom is in good shape, I suggest you just use the original mounting bolts and seal with whatever sealer you choose (fill the holes with sealer before pushing bolts thru and coat the surface around the bolts before tightening...just clean up excess when done). There are several good sealer choices that will work good. Pick the one you are comfortable with.

I agree as already stated. Use 3M 4200, coat the bolts and the holes. Don't use sillycone.

Have a great day

Hello m8s...

Bob is correct on his caulk of choice ( 3m 4200 )

One thing though.. make sure you remove All old sealant from both the holes and the bolts ( if reused ) wire wheel works good on the bolts.

When you put your beaded bolts through the transom.. slighly turn them counter clockwise..untill the last 1/2" .. this way you can screw in caulk instead of just pushing it out the hole as it goes in.

One final note.. Do not turn the bolt when seated...turn the nut. If you turn the bolt..its threads will screw out the caulking to its head.

All through bolt fasteners should be tightened from the nut end..IMHO..

YD.
